Love this unit. Just moved into a new home and bought this to go with the speakers I had installed in the walls and this thing does not disappoint. Having Alexa built in is a nice added bonus.

I've been using Yamaha Receivers since the ea. early 90's. Funny thing about them they don't seem to ever die. When I upgrade someone in the family usually takes the old one or it gets moved to a different location. So it's safe to say I'm biased.
I've found that Yamaha Customer Service to be very helpful even if the unit is out of warranty.
Which brings us to their latest iteration the RX-A1080. I picked it up for a system in our new home. This past week I finally got to give her a run.
I set the RX up with a wired Network connection rather than use the wifi. The unit did its' firmware upgrade fast and simple. Internet radio comes through nice and clean.
The unit has the Yamaha YPAO for automatic sound-field setup, but I've come to prefer doing it manually. The menu system is a bit different from the previous version but it's easy enough to navigate. This way I can set the speaker crossovers properly and adjust the distances and speaker levels to my liking. This went smoothly and relatively quickly.
The previous model, the 1070, could be set up as a 9.1 system by changing Zone 2. The 1080 does not do this. I called
Yamaha and was told that if rear effect speakers are connected that the unit would decide whether it would send data to the front effects or rear effects.
I first tried watching some movies on Netflix and was very happy with the performance.
Then I put on a Blu-Ray copy of "Interstellar". I used the AI surround effect and the film was simply STUNNING, FANTASTIC. It had a great sound-field and the movie was spectacular as it was meant to be.
Once again, Yamaha hits it out of the park

I just began buying a new receiver and things have changed now a day. The Dolby ATMOS is the buzz word. I didn't fully understand ATMOS but I bought the Yamaha RX-A1080 thinking that is what I needed. Well I was wrong I found out it only has 2 ATMOS channels not 4. I needed 4 ATMOS channels so I had to bring this back and exchange it for the RX-A2080. I new I wanted 7.2 surround but to get 4 ATMOS channels I needed a 9.2.4 Surround receiver.

Workhorse

Many options abound this receiver. Replacing a major brand receiver that I couldn't handle any longer due to the lack of sound fields available. Had a Yamaha receiver many years ago before HDMI and it definitely was a workhorse. This receiver is solid, and I've set it up in bi-amp mode. Glad I came back to Yamaha.

This has been a great receiver. The ability for multizone has been great. I can watch a movie in one area and my son can play xbox on a different tv.

Bunk Receiver

DO NOT purchase this receiver. Mine worked perfectly for 2 1/2 years then boom.... all the sudden won't power on and only flashes the protection mode lights. I even had a local computer repair company look at it and other than tell me there's no physical damage, that they don't know what happened.
I really splurged on this purchase and regret it. Very upsetting.
Best Buy was no help whatsoever in the process.

After 2.5 years of ownership, it began automatically shutting off whenever the sound was turned up to even semi-modest levels. We have Best Buy’s total tech support, and even they recommended no longer looking at Yamahas. I’ve had three Yamaha receivers malfunction or die this year; so while the name brand is reputable and the specs for this particular receiver were great for the price, I just have very little faith in the longevity of the products. The warranty was no help, either.
