Happy With This System
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this for my home theater. I grew up on this brand so I was committed to staying with what I know. I’m happy with my purchase. I have no real complaints. The makers of these electronics did change how you connect the wiring so it’s a bit of a challenge to get the wires connected with the speakers. I suggest using banana clips for ease of connection. There is a lot to it so I still have to get use to how to use it. Manual not very helpful.

A bit of a pain to setup but works very nicely aft
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A good looking unit with some documentation. The available App is pretty much useless. But once you figure out everything the unit works very well. The internet access electronics disrupted my local network so I had to block it and will probably eventually shut it down. But it did allow me to upgrade the firmware before I shut it down. Other than that the unit Is working fine and it’s a very good upgrade to my very old previous stereo RCVR.

Pound for pound champ

Surround sound leaves much to be desired
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I set this receiver up for a 5.1 bi-amp configuration with two tower speakers, a center speaker, and two large surround speakers at the rear. I used the supplied mic to have the receiver do an auto levels adjustment for my small listening area of 12 x 12 feet. I tried multiple times to make adjustments when the auto provided poor results but could not get good sound levels and definition from the two surround speakers. While I appreciate that this is a low end receiver I did expect something better from it. It was to replace an older Denon receiver but the sound quality was so much less that I decided to ship to the Denon to southern California and have it repaired. With the Denon the surround effect is so good that when I first bought it I thought that I was hearing people outside my house but it was the ambient noise added into the shows that I was hearing for the first time with the Denon. With this Yamaha it was back to listening in stereo mode.

Outstanding receiver
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great receiver and very flexible. Audio to our surround system is great. The only challenge was that the default audio settings for a TV are Audio 01 not HDMI ARC. So we had to figure out how to change default settings to enable this feature. YPAO made speaker set up easy though the rear speakers were a lot quieter than expected so it's not a perfect solution and may require some tinkering to meet personal preference.

Yamaha A/V Used to be good
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Upgraded a Yamaha RX-V677 receiver with RX-A780 to get Dolby Vision and more HDCP inputs. Overall very disappointed with the product features and quality (buggy) of implementation. Connected to a new and updated Apple TV 4K, Sony XBR-55X950G TV. Numerous 16 Gb HDMI cables, resets and settings required to get Dolby Vision working. None were required to get Dolby Vision working for direct Apple TV to Sony TV connection. Adding RX-A780 to the mix made the problem almost insurmountable. When viewing Dolby Vision content and the receiver is powered off into standby mode the content on the TV is displayed is weak and foggy looking. Obviously something is not being passed through the receiver correctly. AV Receiver is connected to multiple B & W speakers. YPAO analysis produced flat sounding audio. Tweaking tone adjustments finally made the audio tolerable. Amplifier selection for connected speakers and desired listening modes has so many variables that I was happy to get any audio to come out. This is not a user friendly or novice audiophile feature. I suspect many users never alter the default configuration. Older Yamaha receivers allowed for changes to the unit from a web browser. That ability is now limited in this new unit. The ability to stream Spotify from an iPad to the receiver is a great feature. It is one of the few features on this unit that work consistently. Using ARC/eARC to return TV audio to the receiver works 3 out of 4 times it is used. On the 4th use when ARC is used the receiver switches to AUDIO 4 input, then the receiver locks up and no audio is produced. A power off of all components is required to get anything working again. I update my components every few years to keep up with technology and improve the listening/viewing experience. Yamaha used to be my go to brand. After my experience with the A780 I guess I need to consider other brands. Product was purchased online and picked up at a store. Box was pretty banged up already. No useful user documentation in the box. Lots of compliance documentation in every language but nothing helpful for the purchaser. Contacted Customer Service via the web site regarding a few of the issues listed above. Response was "we cannot guarantee that every television and/or device will work 100%". Clearly not even the newest devices are tested.
