States that it is a 7 HDMI in and 2 out, actually has a front HDMI in as well for a total of 8 inputs.Outstanding sound and control. Brief pauses when changing the input and watching that input on the other zone. Difficult to control which zone sounds goes where and pretty complicated but absolutely amazing once the controls are learned. Highly recommend the phone app for control and also turn off party mode when you get it as this disables a lot of features. Lost like 6 hours trying to find out why it wasn;t working before I realized this.

This unit is replacing a Yamaha RX-V667
That unit will go to the bedroom because the RX-A1030 has 4K pass thru in addition to network connectivity and dual zone HDMI.
I had split the HDMI out before but now I have two HDMI outputs (one for living room the other in the kitchen) so I can have the same input or different playing at the same time.

Nice AVR, But Quirky Networking

I've been a Denon devotee, but after trying to install a new AVR X3000 into my home theater and networked PC and NAS, I had to switch to the Yamaha because the Denon's sound and power was really lame. The Geek Squad installers never could get it to drive my two subwoofers, in Zone 1 or in Zone 2. The Yamaha has very good sound quality and plenty of power for my mid-range home theater and multi-room Zone 2. Where we ran into problems, however, was getting the AVR to network to my PC, second AV rack and NAS. The Geek Squad guys couldn't figure it out, the Level 2 guys at Yamaha couldn't figure it out; even the Secret Weapon guys couldn't figure it out, and everyone took control of my PC remotely to verify that all setting s were correct. Ultimately, a home theater expert and a PC expert came out to the house together and between the two of them, they got it working, but it turned out that the network access to PC-based content and NAS content was virtually useless as the Yamaha read all content as one big file, and all playlists were meaningless. Further, while the AVR identified all the photo files on my PC, it would not bring up any of them. Fortunately, I can access all the files and playlists through other devices and connections, so all is well, but the network connection is virtually useless. Also, the Remote is not particularly intuitive. It has plenty of rows of small buttons that operate everything, but it's not set up in a way to be user-friendly for someone who doesn't spend time reading through the very long user's manual. Last, none of the Codes work with the Xfinity/Comcast Remote Control's 'All On' feature.

This was recommended by the Geek Squad tech who provided his input for our home A/V inquiry. Seems to be working out just as anticipated so far. Sound and power is ample for our environment.

After blowing away my HT budget on just the ML speakers, it was to late to cheap out on the receiver. I listened to several in the Magnolia room powering the 40's and found the 1030 sounded as good or better than some pricier competitors. Yamaha has always maintained solid products that'll last for years and that helped with my decision. Set-up was a breeze (once I figured out the techy jargon!) with on screen display. It even worked with my cable remote without me doing any programming! I was also able to bi-amp my fronts using it's dedicated outputs and haven't even looked through the instructions yet! I'm far from being a tech, so if I can do it, you can to. I'm very impressed with this and my 3.1 speaker system for now and appreciate the option to add many more speakers and another sub in the future if desired. So do a little research, give it a listen, add your quality speakers and wires, and enjoy it. I do!

Fantastic Receiver

Simply a great receiver; my 3rd Yamaha, I also own Sony & NAD receivers. The RX-A 1030 in my application is a whole home media control center and music sounds excellent over a variety of in-wall and bookshelf speakers around the house. Allows both the HDMI audio and amplifier speaker outputs to be on simultaneously. Not all receivers do that. In fact I called the HQ of one Brand and their question back to me was "why would you want to do that?" - because on Zone 2 I have an HDMI switch to TVs in other rooms and have speakers in the room with the receiver. Controlling it over an iPad is easy and fun. Many internet radio stations already configured. So with it's set-up flexibility and great sound, a solid receiver in my book. Completely satisfied.

I bought this amp to because of all of its input and output ports, Its Flexibility in controlling zone 2. I have this amp driving 10 speakers. 2 front Standup, 1 center channel, 2 bookshelf speakers left and right on the wall connected to the extended zone 2 speakers. You can use the zone 2 ports to add 2 more speakers. 1 definitive 4000 supercube, 2 rear book shelf speakers in the back and 2 left bookshelf speakers left and right in the middle of the room mounted on the wall. Sound is awesome. Then what is cool is that it has a pre out zone 2 port that I send the signal to my old onkyo 2 zone amp that drives 6 speakers in another room. Then on my second amp I have a pre-amp zone 2 ports and I send that signal to my 3rd amp in my Kitchen. So if I want to play music in my whole house I hook up one device to this Yamaha amp turn on all the amps, turn on all of the zone 2s and now have music playing in the whole house. This amp also has a iphone app that you can download and control your amp through that amp. That is a great feature. But you have to be hooked up to the same wireless network as your amp is on to work. You cannot use your data plan to control the amp. But in short the amp is very very flexible. Has lots of inputs and output jacks and that is what I needed.

I listened to this receiver vs the comparable Denon and Pioneer and thought this Yamaha drove the speakers a bit more and was a bit cleaner. The internet reviews were great as well. However, I found the receiver to be less intuitive and more difficult to use than my Denon receiver is. Also the remote has very small buttons and is not intuitive for some settings. Yamaha does have a nice tablet and phone app though that makes setting up the receiver a breeze. Overall, we are very happy with the receiver.

I was interested in a receiver for setting up home theater. I was between this one and a comparable Marantz unit. This one had a broader sound stage and did a better job on the music (although I liked some of the sound separation of the Marantz a little better, though it had a narrower sound stage). The thing I wished this had was built in internet (it's on the updated replacement model for this unit) but I got this on an open-box closeout and with the money saved by not buying the current version, I'm able to purchase Apple TV (which gives me the internet interface) and a power conditioner.

This receiver is incredible! Yamaha produces top quality receivers that sound fantastic. I had no problems connecting a BluRay player, XBox 360 & a computer all with HDMI cables (8 total HDMI connections, 2 out for multi zone connections). Once the speakers were connected, the rest was pure bliss! After a month and a half, I am still experimenting with settings & different sound programs. Tweaking the settings & choosing the "correct" sound program is a matter of preference, but I assure you that the sound quality straight out of the box is crystal clear & will make you rejoice in the purchase! This is the second Yamaha I have purchased & have been extremely happy with both. The first receiver is 16 years old & still going strong.
