This is my first AV receiver, so I'm coming at this from a blank slate. The good: * Has a ton of functionality that's fairly intuitive after a brief learning period * Haven't had any issues with A/V sync and HDMI passthrough * The YPAU setup process was pretty straightforward * The firmware update was uneventful * Sounds good to my ears, but I got this along with a set of speakers, so can't disentangle the two * Has no problem powering my five speakers to as loud as I'd ever listen to them (fronts are average sensitivity 150W continuous, others are 100W continuous) * iOS-based WiFi setup and AirPlay both work well. If had AirPlay break up once about an hour into a podcast, but I'm not sure if that was my network or the receiver The neutral: * The app (MusicCast) is a good alternative to the OSD/remote, and was reliable in connecting to the receiver, but doesn't cover everything (many of the settings are OSD-only) * I haven't been able to test HDMI 2.1/4k @ 120Hz/GSync and VRR yet The not so great: * The OSD is pretty slow. Like, slow enough such that you can see each line of text get drawn. Keep in mind, there's nothing fancy going on here, it's 99% crude bitmapped fonts and transparent black blocks, 1% pictures (album art and such). Compared to my LG TV it's a bit of a bummer * I lost video once when I had the OSD open and my PS4 switched video modes (non-HDR to HDR). Easy to avoid, though * AIrPlay will only show one of artist, album or song on the receiver's display at a time. It'd be nice to combine them and scroll. May apply to other inputs too. Minor niggle

Sound is great, setup was smooth and it integrated with other components nearly seamlessly. Not wild about the app which seems awkward to navigate. I DO love the easy to read and use the front panel. Finally, the most important knob - the VOLUME- is biggest and front and center…never to be confused with other hard to read controls.

Do not buy! Nothing but problems from day one. Been trying to get a repair or replacement for months.

I get good sound, for my record player into my 4K Blu-ray player, plenty of speaker support and the controller does the job. Looks sharp. Can't quite do everything from the physical controls in the front, the core tasks are accessible from there. I definitely recommend it.

My previous Yamaha RX-V385 did excellent work for years, but its 70w/channel just wasn't suited for my new 100w speakers (yes, they work, but it degrades audio quality). The RX-V6A checked all the boxes and then some, it has features I will probably never use, such as the Front Presence or Rear Surround speaker options. Setup was quick & easy, with everything on the back panel clearly labelled. I appreciate being able to use banana plugs for the speaker connections. Audio quality with the 100w Klipsch speakers improved noticeably with more clarity, depth & definition than with the RX-V385. However, some features are difficult to access w/o sufficient explanation in the manual and I wish the front panel could display both decoder status & speaker status simultaneously (like on the RX-V385). However, that's minor and this AVR delivers where it matters most. I haven't owned it very long yet, but so far it's a worthy successor to the RX-V385.

This RX-V6 is off the hook. From the integrated Yamaha app that lets you control audio levels, treble, bass levels and more, all from your phone, to it's instant connectivity with music apps like Spotify, this receiver is great. I upgraded from a 5.1 Onkyo system and this has improved the output quality of all my speakers. I'm using Anthony Gallo A'Diva's for the 7.1 and two TR-3 subwoofers for the full 7.2 effect. Everything sounds better, games, music, and movies both streamed and blu-ray. If you collect vinyl, this also has a great direct phono hook-up and really improved the quality of my vinyl sound as well. I was able to get rid of my Schitmani pre-amp and now it's a direct turntable to receiver set-up which is awesome. I don't know any other receiver out there with this many features at this price point. But, if there are, I can only vouch for this one. It's legit.

I’ve been using the Yamaha RX-V6A for a about 2 months now, and it’s been an amazing upgrade for my home theater. The sound quality is crisp, clear, and powerful — whether I’m watching movies in Dolby Atmos or listening to music through MusicCast. It drives my 7.1 setup effortlessly, and the YPAO room calibration made setup super easy. The receiver also supports 8K HDMI and 4K/120Hz, so I know I’m set for the future as I upgrade my TV and gaming gear. MusicCast integration works great for streaming, and I love being able to control everything from the app. The design looks sleek and modern, and while the on-screen menu could be a little prettier, it’s still very easy to use once you get the hang of it. Overall, this receiver offers incredible value for the price — tons of power, modern features, and Yamaha reliability. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to build or upgrade a serious home theater setup!

One of the first hdmi 2.1 A/V receivers on the market and it has some flaws potentially serious if 2.1 support is important to you. I'll start off by first saying it is not Yamaha's fault for this issue. The reported 2.1 sync issue has to do with the chip company they sourced the part from and it has been said this is not a problem that can be completely fixed with software updates. I'm most likely going to return it until now info is released about how to fix the issue and which devices it affects. Since there are very few 2.1 devices out it's hard to know how big the list is and the exact issues. Also regarding updates some of the listed features do not and will not work until possibly Dec or Early next year when other software updates are released by Yamaha. Right now I have some complaints about the sluggish response in the menus moving around, the loud click it makes when switching on and off, and seemingly broken hdmi 2.1 mentioned earlier. As far as audio it sounds great and hdmi 4k60hz works great, just not 4k120hz yet. It is a pricey to not have everything working perfectly. The on tv screen menus is not the best I've seen and for the price should be better. Denon has a pretty slick ui but they don't give you as many hdmi 2.1 inputs for the model in this Yamaha price range. Last complaint is I wish it were a little more compact (not as tall)

This is my 2nd receiver purchase. My first was a Sony STR-DN840 purchased back in 2013, which recently died out. I was in the market for a upgrade that consisted of having HDMI 2.1 and enough power to handle my Polk Signature S60/S35/S15x2 without breaking bank.... and I must say, this was a great upgrade. The sound options and customization are fantastic! Much more broad than my previous receiver. I’m still messing with sounds to see what I prefer most for Music, and then for both Movies & Video Games. What I love most about this receiver is how modern and sleek it looks! I was torn between a Denon Receiver that was $30 more, but I would be lying if I didn’t say my deciding factor was based on the actual look lol. Overall, for the price, you will be pleased!

1 of the only AVRs with multiple HDMI 2.1 inputs. HDMI 2.1 functions WILL NOT BE ENABLED/WORK until a Firmware update later on (unknown date, estimated before end of year last I heard) Many may be worried about the HDMI 2.1 bug, but dont be. Yamaha said stuff wouldn't work till FW update, and the people who found this so called 'bug' recently got 4k 120hz HDR pass-through to work... proving themselves that they were wrong. It would not work 100% of the time every boot, but it did and it being buggy makes sense - as the FW is not out yet to enable it officially. UI is clunky compared to old Yamaha AVRs. Cannot navigate entire menu using controls on AVR itself (knobs, not the remote). UI also seems sluggish compared to older models I had (slight delay when changing settings/going into different menus) this may be fixed later on in a FW update. eARC is fully working with an LG C9 with my 1080ti PC. Quite a bit of power to this, able to push my Polk S55s well and noticeably better than my old budget AVR. TL:DR. HDMI 2.1 support coming later on via FW update. Powerful, but clunky UI. Nonissue after stuff is set up. Depends on remote for most settings. Looks sleek, feels very well built.

I'll echo the experience of some of the other reviewers here. There are many great things about the V6A, but overall it feels like it's only 75% finished - it demonstrates a lot of glitchy behaviors that make it very hard to live with. This may be fixed in future firmware releases, but if you're using this for more than one device, it's probably a bit too early to buy this one. The good parts - the sound and surround processors are really great. There was a very noticeable increase in the quality of sound imaging after changing from my previous AVR (an earlier Yamama model). The new physical design is nice - the status display is smaller than on previous models which is actually better in reducing the light from the receiver in the viewing room. When you change inputs, the name pops up briefly in larger print, then drops to a small size. I like it. The bad parts - there is support for many HDMI formats, but switching between them is haphazard and slow - it can lose sync for 20 sec, which is long enough that my TV (a new LG OLED 65") thinks that there's no input. Video switching and HDMI support in general seems to be good for consoles (I have XBOX Series X and PS/4 Pro), but my Xfinity X1 box (the newest one with no antenna connection) basically does not cooperate - if switching from any other source, it's dead unless you physically pull the HDMI connector, then plug it back in. AppleTV4K has always been a poor HDMI neighbor (it often feels like the Settings are more like recommendations than constraints on what the box does) - even if you set it NOT to output in Dolby Vision, certain sources (like The Mandalorian) cause a DV prompt to show up on the screen. If you're using this just for gaming, I think that works, but trying to get Xfinity video AND sound working can take 5 minutes of dinking around and unplugging things. Not acceptable. Worse yet, I was only able to get to this sorry state by turning off CEC everywhere possible. Without doing so, the receiver will occasionally flip to other inputs, particularly the XBox. Probably triggered by the same problem that's causing the long mode switches. With CEC on, the Apple TV tries to engage Dolby Vision and then all the other inputs are scrambled. I expect this will all be remedied with a future FW rev. I received the unit with FW 1.13 which was much worse than FW 1.23. I purchased this unit during the holiday season, so had I had more time to play with this than the normal return period, and another 6 weeks for additional updates. But the frustration of having to run with no CEC and still have many problem is just too much of a risk, so I returned this unit tonight. My previous system with earlier Yamaha AVR and 1080P Sony generally needed only the receiver remote for one-touch functionality. I may experiment with taking the sources to the TV and handling sound via ARC. In that model, the new features of the V6A are not really useful. This unit will be worth checking out again when the interoperability issues are better.

Needs a firmware update to address issues with hdmi/earc switching and audio dropouts. Very frustrating. Audio quality and adjustments are numerous, and if you are just using this for that or maybe a phono player you are set, but try adding a DVD player or a streamer like a Nvidia Shield and you are bound for trouble. Maybe Yamaha will address these problems maybe not, Google for more info. Also know that most controls are only easily accessible via the app. That's not a slam, but just know that the front panel has almost no controls & the remote interface even on a TV is very cryptic with abbreviations -it all works, just takes more brain power to figure out than it should. Could be a very good unit if the hdmi connectivity is corrected, but if you have a lot of peripherals you will have trouble.

I've been waiting for these 8K AVR's to ship from Yamaha and Denon this year. So far the releases have been all over the place in terms of being able to find them; but finally Yamaha's first 2020 receiver's are here and they don't disappoint. The amount of features this thing has is awesome being able to manually being able to assign different HDMI ports to different to HDMI 1.4 and 2.0 and later this winter to 2.1 is a game changer for me, I have a lot of video game systems and gear that doesn't always work with the auto feature that most amps have so this is great hassle free way to completely be in control of my entertainment. Also one of the biggest disappointments of Denon's 2020 amps is it didn't support 1440p 120hz for Xbox One X/PC playback, I'm happy to report that the RX-V6A does support it and it looks and plays great. The sound and picture is amazing out of this thing, really impressed and glad I waited for Yamaha, I can't wait to see the HDMI 2.1 features when they deliver the update later this year for PS5/XboxSX.

I bought this to replace my 12 year old Yamaha receiver, i wanted to upgrade to a devoce with WiFi support. The setup was super easy, has many hdmi orts ans works and sounds terrefic! Very happy!

A very good receiver that is easy to use. I like the HDMI inputs and works well with the TV. The receiver also has two zones so works well with speakers in other rooms.

After spending some time with this unit i know i made the right choice. This is a feature packed unit at an excellent price point. Lots of reviewers are complaining about the menus and user interface but it is no more difficult to navigate than any other brand out there. If you want easy buy a soundbar! Coming from a mid 2000's era Onkyo unit the Yamaha interface is perfectly fine. If you want to be excited about watching movies again go this route, audition some speakers and get started in putting together a home entertainment system that'll have all your friends coming to your house for every event!

needed a 7 channel receiver to replace a 5 yr old sony that died. This one definitely has more power and sounds better than the sony did. Install was simple.

I purchased this Yamaha receiver after my Onkyo had given up the ghost. First impressions were very good. I love the sleek modern and simplistic design that is lacking in pretty much all other receivers (especially in this price range). Feature wise, this thing is about average. It has many of the things you would come to expect from a receiver in 2020 (music streaming over wifi, bluetooth, 4K HDR, etc) but it is lacking in a few departments. Firstly, the amplifier section is average. At this price I was expecting it to perform a little better. My out going Onkyo had a slight advantage in sound even though it was only half the price of this unit. Secondly, there is no separate Subwoofer crossover control for the LFE channel. I always like to set my sub crossover around 80Hz as it blends nicely with my Klipsch towers. I believe the sub crossover is set depending on the crossover settings for your front speakers (but there is no way to tell and no way to see what it is set to by the unit). Finally, I have a lot of issues with ARC/eARC. The receiver has trouble with the HDMI handshake with my Samsung QLED TV. Sometime I can get the ARC to work and sometime it refuses to. I have to unplug both the TV and the Receiver a few times before it starts working again. I'm not sure if this is isolated to my TV/Receiver combination but I did not have this issue with my Onkyo. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase. Movies and Music sound great (although it could be better with a higher end Denon) and the design and features are adequate at this price. I'm hoping future firmware updates don't just bring HDMI 2.1 with 8K/4K@120Hz but also bring more features and overall improvements.
