Synopsis

Rocky
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. A once-promising pugilist, Rocky is now taking nickel-and-dime bouts and running strongarm errands for local loan sharks to survive. Even his supportive trainer, Mickey (Burgess Meredith), has given up on Rocky. All this changes thanks to Muhammad Ali-like super-boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). With the Bicentennial celebration coming up, Creed must find a "Cinderella" opponent for the big July 4th bout -- some unknown whom Creed can "glorify" for a few minutes before knocking him cold. Rocky Balboa was not the only Cinderella involved here: writer/director Sylvester Stallone, himself a virtual unknown, managed to sell his Rocky script (one of 35 that he'd written over the years) on the proviso that he be given the starring role. Since the film was to be made on a shoestring and marketed on a low-level basis, the risk factor to United Artists was small. For Stallone, this was a make-or-break opportunity -- just like Rocky's million-to-one shot with Apollo Creed. Costing under a million dollars, Rocky managed to register with audiences everywhere, earning back 60 times its cost. The film won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Casual movie buffs and Rocky fans rejoice! If you haven't owned the movie or the entire Rocky Collection, this is yours to start. Now there were complaints of BluRay transfers for the film, but this recent 40th edition may appease consumers, providing rich 1:78 picture and excellent soundtrack from the violent punches in the ring to Bill Conti's iconic music. This copy comes included with a brief featurette of Creed and a UV Digital Copy for redemption.

I like the film "Rocky". Not my choice for Best Picture of 1976. That should've been "Network". But it's a very good, heart-warming film nonetheless. As for this blu-ray disc, it is superb. Several interior scenes that appear too dark in previous formats are clearer and less grainy. The surround sound is brilliant, especially Bill Conti's memorable music score. And the many extras are worth watching. Especially the tribute to Burgess Meredith.

What makes ‘Rocky’ such a resounding success is its heart, technical innovation and Stallone himself, who not only provides an Oscar nominated script but an Oscar nominated performance as endearing, down-and-out southpaw, Rocky Balboa. Filled with iconic and pop-culture defining moments, ‘Rocky’ is one of the greatest sports movies of all time.

The first Rocky movie along with the last one (in my opinion) is the best of the Rocky series. Reminds me of a great first album by a new Band. Script, acting (maybe not the fight scenes as much) top rate. Go Stallone!!!

If you a fan of boxing, Philadelphia or just a great underdog story Rocky is the movie for you. I will not get into the whole story behind the movie as many probably already know it so i will just say the new transfer on this disc makes this title deserving of being in your collection.

This Stallone classic is a movie worth remembering in the history of sport/underdog stories. The acting, the cinematography, the action and soundtrack. "Yo, Adrian...we did it!" - Sylvester Stallone

Based on a true story of a local fighter given the opportunity to fight the heavyweight champion of his time. The training actually performed by Sylvester Stallone was awesome. Carl Weathers portrayal of Apollo Creed was true to the character.
