What is an always-on display on a smartwatch?

An always-on display keeps a simplified watch face visible when you are not actively using the smartwatch. It typically shows the time and select details in a dimmed view, then switches to the full display when you interact with the watch.

How does an always-on display differ from raise-to-wake?

An always-on display keeps basic information visible while your wrist is at rest. Raise-to-wake turns on the full display when you lift your wrist to look at the watch. Some smartwatches let you use both features together.

What information can an always-on smartwatch display show?

Depending on the smartwatch and watch face, the always-on view may show the time, date, battery level, activity totals or other selected details. Some information may refresh less frequently or appear only when the full display is active.

Can you customize the always-on watch face on a smartwatch?

Many always-on display smartwatches offer watch faces with customizable colors, styles and data fields, also called complications. The dimmed view may simplify your chosen design, and customization options vary by operating system and watch face.

Can you turn off a smartwatch's always-on display?

Smartwatches with an always-on display generally let you turn the feature off in display settings. Some also allow sleep, theater or other modes to temporarily switch off the display. Available controls vary by smartwatch and software version.

Always On Display Smartwatches

Always-on display smartwatches keep essential information visible at a glance, so you can check the time, date and select watch face details without tapping the screen or raising your wrist. Unlike a smartwatch display that goes completely dark between interactions, an always-on screen typically switches to a dimmed, simplified view while your wrist is at rest. Depending on the model and watch face, that view may show your daily step count, battery level or activity progress alongside the time. Many smartwatches with always-on displays use AMOLED or OLED technology, and some feature adaptive refresh rates designed to help reduce display power consumption. As you compare always-on display smartwatches, consider screen size, text readability and outdoor visibility, especially if you want a watch that is easy to read during a walk, at your desk or between sets at the gym. Customizable watch faces can also help you prioritize the information you check most often, although the details available in always-on mode vary by device. Choosing the best always-on display smartwatch for your needs means balancing glanceable convenience with battery life, smartphone compatibility and the features you use every day. Enabling an always-on display generally uses more battery power than turning the screen off between interactions, so compare manufacturer battery estimates carefully and check whether those estimates include always-on mode. Features such as GPS tracking, cellular connectivity and frequent workouts can also affect how often you need to recharge. For fitness tracking smartwatches, look for activity modes, heart rate monitoring and water-resistance ratings suited to your routine, while confirming which workout metrics remain visible without waking the full screen. If staying connected is a priority, compare support for call and text notifications, contactless payments and compatible apps; these capabilities may depend on your paired phone, service plan or device model. Adjustable brightness, scheduled display settings and sleep modes, where available, give you more control over how your smartwatch screen behaves throughout the day and night. A comfortable band and a case size that fits your wrist can round out your choice, making an always-on smartwatch practical for both everyday wear and active use.
