Choosing an extension cord for an air conditioner starts with checking whether the appliance manufacturer allows one at all. Many window air conditioners and portable air conditioners must plug directly into a properly grounded wall outlet, and their instructions prohibit extension cords and power strips. Air conditioners draw substantial electrical current, particularly as the compressor starts, so an unsuitable cord can overheat, cause voltage drop, or create a fire hazard. Even a heavy-duty extension cord labeled for appliances is not automatically safe for your particular AC unit. Before shopping for an air conditioner extension cord, review the owner’s manual for outlet requirements, electrical ratings, and any restrictions on cord use. Match the installation to the unit’s specified voltage and circuit requirements, and never remove a grounding prong or use an adapter to force an incompatible plug into an outlet. If the factory power cord cannot reach a suitable receptacle, the safer solution is usually to reposition the unit within its installation guidelines or have a licensed electrician install an appropriate outlet closer to the air conditioner. If your air conditioner’s manufacturer explicitly permits an extension cord, follow its requirements for cord length, wire gauge, grounding, and electrical rating rather than relying on a general “heavy-duty” description. Extension cord gauge is expressed in American Wire Gauge, or AWG, with lower numbers indicating thicker conductors; however, wire thickness alone does not establish compatibility. A cord’s current rating, length, construction, and intended environment also matter, and a longer cord can increase voltage drop. Choose only a cord that meets every manufacturer requirement and bears a certification mark from a recognized testing organization, such as UL or ETL. Keep the cord fully uncoiled and uncovered, and never run it under rugs, through doorways, or anywhere it could be pinched, damaged, or exposed to water. Do not connect extension cords together or use a power strip or surge protector as a substitute for a suitable wall outlet. Stop using the air conditioner if you notice a hot plug, discoloration, a burning smell, or repeated breaker trips, and have the appliance and electrical connection evaluated before resuming use.
