A Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapter is a networking accessory that adds power to an Ethernet connection or separates power from it. PoE connections carry electrical power and network data over the same Ethernet cable and are commonly used with IP cameras, wireless access points and VoIP phones.
A PoE injector combines power from an external power source with Ethernet data for a PoE-compatible device. A PoE splitter takes an incoming PoE connection and separates it into Ethernet data and a dedicated power connector for a device that does not accept power through its Ethernet port.
These are Power over Ethernet standards that define power delivery and device negotiation. IEEE 802.3af is commonly called PoE, 802.3at is called PoE+, and 802.3bt supports higher power levels and is often called PoE++. Match the adapter's supported standard to the connected device's requirements.
Active PoE adapters use standards-based detection to identify a compatible powered device before supplying power. Passive PoE adapters supply a fixed voltage without that detection process. Passive PoE connections require matching voltage, polarity and pin assignments between the adapter and the connected device.
No. A PoE injector can connect to a standard Ethernet port on a non-PoE switch or router. The injector uses a separate power source to add power to the outgoing Ethernet connection. A switch with a compatible PoE port can supply power directly, so a separate injector is generally unnecessary for that connection.
