Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character unlocks give you several ways to expand your roster beyond the eight starting fighters. In this Nintendo Switch fighting game, you can unlock additional base-game characters by playing Smash battles, completing Classic Mode, or progressing through the World of Light adventure. Playing regular Smash matches can trigger a “Challenger Approaching” encounter, where defeating the incoming fighter adds that character to your roster. Classic Mode offers another route, with character-specific unlock paths that make it useful for players who prefer a series of themed battles. Try different starting fighters and revisit Classic Mode with newly unlocked characters to keep expanding your options. If you lose a challenger battle, that character is not permanently out of reach: Challenger’s Approach becomes available in the Games & More menu, giving you another chance to win the encounter. These different character unlock methods let you build your lineup while practicing attacks, recovery moves, shielding, and other skills that help in future battles. World of Light takes a different approach to unlocking Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters, combining exploration, spirit battles, and encounters with captive fighters across an adventure map. Defeating and rescuing those fighters makes them playable in World of Light and unlocks them for the main roster, making this mode a good choice if you want single-player progression alongside new character discoveries. The reverse does not apply, however: unlocking a fighter through Smash battles or Classic Mode does not automatically make that character available within World of Light. For a flexible character unlock strategy, alternate between regular matches, Classic Mode runs, and adventure progress based on how you like to play. Keep base-game unlockable characters separate from downloadable content when planning your roster, too. Paid DLC fighters require the corresponding downloadable content and cannot be earned simply by completing more matches or finishing the adventure. Understanding that distinction helps you focus your playtime on available character unlocks while deciding whether additional fighters fit your interests.

You can unlock fighters by playing regular Smash matches, completing Classic Mode runs, or finding fighters in the World of Light adventure mode. When a Challenger Approaching battle appears, defeat the challenger to add that fighter to your playable roster.

The starting roster includes Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, and Pikachu. You can expand your roster by unlocking additional fighters through gameplay. Mii Fighters can also be created in the Mii Fighter menu.

Yes. After playing more, look for the Challenger's Approach option in the Games & More menu. It lets you rematch challengers you previously lost to, so losing an unlock battle does not permanently prevent you from unlocking that fighter.

Yes. Fighters you rescue in World of Light also become available in other game modes. However, unlocking a fighter through Smash matches or Classic Mode does not automatically make that fighter playable within World of Light; you still need to find and rescue them in the adventure.

No. DLC fighters require their corresponding downloadable content and are not earned through the base game's character-unlock battles. Once the appropriate DLC is installed, those fighters become available without a Challenger Approaching battle.
