Some items like your keys or wallet you just take everywhere you go because you just never know. For anyone with an EOS R series camera, add the RF50mm F1.8 STM lens to that list. As part of the EOS R System, it’s nice and compact thanks to its RF mount so you can shoot – and get a great shot – anywhere and anytime. Size isn’t all though. As a fixed focal length lens, it lets you be creative with composition and can be used for a wide range of scenes from snapshots to portraits, landscapes to low-light situations and more. Those images will stand out, too, just like you intend whether on social media, or when sharing or printing, thanks to impressive optical features like a PMo aspherical lens to suppress aberrations, Super Spectra coating to reduce flaring and ghosting, and a large f/1.8 aperture for low-light shooting and beautiful bokeh. Pick it up and use it one time and you’ll see for yourself, and you won’t be able to leave the house without it.

Offering a natural perspective along with a fast maximum aperture, the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM from Canon is a versatile normal-length prime characterized by its bright f/1.4 aperture to suit working in low-light conditions and for producing shallow depth of field imagery. This lens also features a Gaussian optics design, along with two high refractive index elements, to control spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in difficult lighting conditions. Complementing the optical design is a micro USM, which enables quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control. I love this lens and recommend it for professionals and casual shooters both. I shoot a lot of weddings and this year I decided to use primes over zooms for my wedding work and I haven't looked back. I got this lens at Best Buy in Yonkers, NY and I recommend this Canon 50mm f1.4 over the f/1.8 version. Faster and better bokeh. The 1.4 is also built better than the 1.8 version and is the better alternative if you don't have the Cheddar Chee$e for fork over for the King of Kings 50mm f/1.2L. Some reviews on the internet don't give this f/1.4 great ratings because it is soft at f/1.4 to f/2.0. It certainly can be but I don't find that to be the case in all situations. If I'm shooting a portrait of one person and use fill flash, the results from f1.4 to 1.8 are quite excellent. If there's more than 1 person in the frame you want in focus, you should be stopping down anyway, no question about it. This lens is best used at f/2.2 to f/8 IMO.Be aware that this lens doesn't come with a hood, but third party hoods are available for cheap. I always used a lens hood when shooting professionally or personally.

I love this lens! Its my first lens so I may be biased but where's why I love it. The images are so sharp - even in night time with low light. The focus is easy - auto focus mode on the lens is easy to use with my Canon 90D. The lens feels sturdy in the hand and attaches easily. I also got a UV filter and lens hood (3rd party) to protect it from harsh direct light. The lens plays nice with the camera body's internal auto focus system as well. I can focus with the shutter button as well as by tapping the display screen. If you want a lens to get you that Bokeh effect, this is the one! Plenty of other great resources online about how to maximize use of this lens.

This has become the main lens that I use in my bag. Overall you won't be disappointed, I do feel it can be a bit slow on the shutter, maybe that is the adapter since I use this lens with my mirrorless camera, but I still think is a great purchase. I used it for a birthday theme park shoot, family session, and got amazing photos with it. I have used it in low lighting, bright scenes and it picks up colors and lighting very well. I cannot speak too much on the video aspect, my intended use is pictures, but I feel like even with video the lens works well. It feels great in the hand, however it can be pretty heavy for my Canon M50. That doesn't scare me from using the lens, again add in the adapter and it's weighty. I did have a hard time with fitting desired background in certain shots (still playing around with it), but that's not necessarily a negative, it just shows how close and how far you can get with the lens depending on what you are shooting. So far, I am not disappointed with my lens!
