Sony - 85" Class BRAVIA XR X90K LED 4K UHD Smart Google TV (2022)

I’ve had this TV for a couple of months now, which I think is long enough to provide a decent review. To describe my situation, I have it wall mounted (that was a huge undertaking), and connected to several peripheral devices. (Xfinity 4k Cable box, Blue-Ray, FireTV 4k stick, and a JBL Bar 9.1 soundbar.) The remote is missing essential buttons to make it useful as an ‘all-in-one’ remote. To begin with, there are no “Fast Forward” or “Reverse” buttons. Those are necessary to use most cable DVR boxes effectively, as well as the FireTV that’s built into the TV. So, you can log into your Amazon account and watch FireTV, but you will not be able to fast forward or reverse, so to me, the app and remote that came with the TV are completely useless. A HUGE fail for Sony in my mind. The next thing it’s missing is the Record button, so you can't use it to record DVR things on your cable box. I wouldn’t mention this, but the TV actually "pairs" itself to your cable box, so it seems like it should have all the necessary buttons. Nope. Additionally, the menu options for DVR and VOR, and all the other items on the paired Xfinity 4k Cable Box do NOT work, except the Guide button and channel buttons. There is no way to pull up the Xfinity main screen, to access recorded programs, so it’s pretty useless to me, and I’m forced to use my Xfinity/Comcast box remote. It’s the largest ISP in the US, so if it “pairs” properly with anything, you’d think it would be Xfinity’s boxes. FAIL again. The TV itself is crazy heavy, and although the mount I bought is for a 150lb television, it still seems feeble under the load of this enormous TV. And here’s something concerning… the back of the TV’s Vesa mount is 400x400. That’s really small for a TV this size, AND the screws are M6 instead of M8. Even Sony’s website says that for a TV this size the Vesa mount should be minimum 400x800 or 800x1200, and the bolts should be M8. I was (okay, I still am) seriously concerned about the feeble Vesa mount on this TV. The electronic setup process was painless, except that I don’t like that Google is involved, and of course they want to know everything about you. Your exact address, your phone number, your email address, and access to everything on your home network. That information was somehow sold or traded immediately, and before I even got finished setting up the TV, and I was getting Spam on my unused Google email account. I’ve had the account for more than 5 years, with zero spam until then. I miss the days when a TV was just a TV, and didn’t harvest and sell your life for a few cents. My JBL BAR 9.1 soundbar works flawlessly, and I did nothing to set it up except plug it into the HDMI 3 eARC slot. Likewise, every other peripheral device I plugged in was recognized and functions properly, and completely automatically. (FireTV, Sony Blue Ray player, and Comcast/Xfinity box (except the button problem above)). I thought I’d like all the available apps, but as I said above, the lack of necessary buttons on the Sony remote control that comes with this renders it all but useless. Because of that, I don't use any of them... I just use my FireTV stick. I also really dislike that Disney, Netflix, and others have their own buttons. Completely unnecessary, and Sony should have used that space for useful buttons, as listed above. The good news is that the picture, is AWESOME. This TV is REALLY bright and crisp, and can be used in the brightest rooms. There is an easy-to-access 3-position control for brightness, so you don’t have to fumble with actual numbers. Dimming is automatic (if you so choose), but additionally there are 3 settings for overall brightness, and we love that. Sometimes at night you want to reduce the brightness, and those 3 settings are perfect for that. There is one anomaly that we noticed, and it’ll probably cause you a bit of a scare. My wife and I have been in bed in another room, and we regularly (like every night) hear the TV turn itself on for a second or two, then off again. It will do that once or twice a night, and we haven’t figured out why. Other than the sadly unusable remote, and that one anomaly, we love the TV. Hope this helps.

The television is typical Sony quality. You’ll have to spend time adjusting the picture ti your liking, but with a lot of adjustments available to tweak, it’s a knob twisters paradise. Of course, no TV is perfect. If you’re looking into “blooming” this or “bleeding” that, well, you’ll find problems in anything if you look hard enough. I work in broadcast so my eye is a bit more sensitive to picture quality issues but for a TV in this price range, it’s more than fine for me. 4K looks great and so does 1080P programming. I am not a gamer so I don’t have any input on that. If you look at fast video action on the screen, it pixelates a bit but I expect that at 60Hz. I can’t stand the higher refresh rates on broadcast or streaming material so I leave things at 60Hz. The bottom line is this: for $2000 it’s more than enough TV to satisfy the knob tweaker. I didn’t want OLED because my room is very bright. Regular LCD is brighter and works better in bright rooms. One negative, however. The software locked up tight once. It required a full reset to get it back so I hope this was just a once in a while problem. The WiFi and network cable streaming work great as well. I don’t like Google software but it looks good and seems to work OK. eArc can be hit or miss. Most of the time, it doesn’t turn my satellite receiver on. I do like the voice command remote but I wish it still had the number keys. All in all it’s a good TV. It’s not perfect, but it does look better than some of the other brands.

I am an avid tech nerd. I am also a savvy shopper. I favor Sony for their tv menus, nits and color profiles. I have personal experience with the Sony x900h, x950h, TCL 6-series, Toshiba Fire TVS, Samsung Q70, and projectors from BenQ and Epson. I know my TVs and what I like.. Samsung absolutely never again. Toshiba for college or low budget. TCL best bang for your buck. Sony X950h is still my favorite. I have stared at Bestbuy TV walls for days and hours. I really want the Sony A90j or X95k. The only other brand I would pick is LG and that would be the C2 or G2. After staring at their walls even after my purchase I kept trying to calibrate my new 85" X90k to look as good as the nicer TVs. I got really close with the colors but not quite. HOWEVER the brightness on the TV is the winner here. It's eye searing. The local dimming is really really good for a $2k 85" full array tv. I have a 4k bluray collection and fully aware that even regular bluray looks and sounds better than streaming. I almost returned the 85" X90k to get a 77" A80k or an open box 85" x95k. I was even thinking about just going for it and spending $5k on an LG G2. Yolo!!! However I just started PC gaming and my gosh the X90k came ALIVE! It looks like the demos you see on the OLED at bestbuy. Now I see what I was mise. When I would go to the store they were playing high quality pc demos and this whol time I thought it was the X90k and needed to return it to get a better TV. I've done the research. If you have $2k. This 85" is the best bang for your bang for your buck. I would chose this over TCL or Samsung. LG doesn't make a good 85" LCD LED. Play some 4k blurays or PC games and you'll see what I was talking about. The Xbox was OK but PC and 4k blurays. Shweeew. Big smile to my face.

The picture is clear, color is very bright and vibrant, has great sound very loud. If quality is something you prioritize when considering a purchase then this is for sure a good pick. Excellent quality in all areas. One negative would be that it has some lag at first when turning on after being off for a while, needs time to boot up like a computer a little bit, but once its going there is no problems. Its not a problem anyway just takes a little time to warm up maybe a minute. My kids love playing their PlayStation on it the graphics and sound is amazing with games.
