    Synopsis

    Superman II
Between giving up his super powers, confronting criminals from outer space, and having problems with his girlfriend, it's a bad time to be the Man of Steel in this sequel to the 1978 blockbuster. When terrorists threaten to destroy Paris with a thermonuclear device as they hold reporter Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) hostage, Superman (Christopher Reeve) comes to the rescue and flings the weapon into space. However, its blast outside the earth's orbit awakens Zod (Terence Stamp), Ursa (Sarah Douglas), and Non (Jack O'Halloran), three villains from Superman's home planet of Krypton who were exiled to outer space for their crimes. Zod and his partners arrive on Earth and use their powers in a bid to take over the U.S., and then the world. However, when Lois realizes that mild mannered Clark Kent and Superman are actually the same person, he brings her to his Fortress of Solitude, where his decision to marry Lois costs him his remarkable strength. Without his super powers, how can Superman vanquish Zod and save the world? Gene Hackman, Ned Beatty, Susannah York, and Jackie Cooper return from the first film, which was shot at the same time as parts of the sequel. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

      effective continuation

As parts of this film were made at the same time as the first Superman film (under Richard Donner), the finished product (credited to Richard Lester) is more effective in terms of continuity than most sequels. By saving Paris from an H-bomb, the Man of Steel inadvertently releases the three villains from Krypton his old man imprisoned at the beginning of the first movie. All three, being as super-unique as our hero, head for Earth to conquer it (with the help of Lex Luthor, of course). At the same time, Superman and Lois's relationship becomes a bit more romantic and he must make a fateful choice. Although some issues bear scrutiny (like our Superman becomes powerful again), there is still the same warmth and humanity from the first film to make this a memorable ride.

Superman II is just as fun as the first movie. It's the movie where I first got to know of General Zod. What's his name who played Zod has good acting. I love the part where Zod has the president hostaged on TV and says "Who is this Superman?", after the president tries calling out to Superman. It has a great continuation from the first movie. I loved how they show scenes from the first movie in the opening credits. If you're a Superman fan, you must own it.

Not as good as it could have been

This release of Superman II I felt could have been better. They included the deleted scenes in the Superman the Movie version of the DVD but this one was lacking in that respect. I'm not talking about the Richard Donner cut of this movie either (there's a different version for that). There were just some added scenes that were aired on the TV releases years ago that could have added to things. In any case, it could have been better.

The first Superman film was truly great, this sequel however, is not quite up to par but will be enjoyed and appreciated by fans of the comic book hero. Good widescreen transfer, but nothing in terms of bonus.
