    Synopsis

    The Abyss
The crew of an experimental, high-tech submersible is called into action to investigate a mysterious nuclear submarine crash. A series of strange encounters leads the crew to suspect the accident was caused by an extraterrestrial craft, and that they may be participating in an encounter with an alien species. However, in order to make contact, they must not only brave the abyss, an exceedingly deep underwater canyon, but also deal with the violent actions of one of their own crew members, an increasingly paranoid Navy SEAL officer. Approved by director James Cameron, The Abyss: Special Edition is an extended director's cut of the 1989 underwater science fiction epic, reinstating nearly a half hour of footage removed from the original release under studio pressure. Much of the restored footage places the film's events in a grander political context, as the crew's mission becomes a factor in the dangerous escalation of nuclear tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The largest change involves the film's ending, which provides further information on the aliens' mission on Earth, bringing the film to closer to Cameron's intention: a modern remake of Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

My husband loves this movie so he insisted that we watch it. I went into the movie with the perception that it was going to be a sci-fi horrow movie, like an older version of Sphere or similar to.. well, it is not at all.. If i remember correctly it is like a 3 hour movie and oh my gosh I fell asleep halfway through... so incredibly slow.. focuses more on character development than what happens in like the last 30 to 45 minutes of the movie. disappointing.

This is a fantastic film, one of my wife and I's favorites! This is a truly epic sci-fi adventure. It should be in the top 20 list of best films ever made! Terrific acting by Ed Harris, Michael Biehn, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Plus, great special effects for it's time. This is definitely a must own for any movie collector, and by that I mean the director's cut. I highly recommend this film! Also, some other great films of this genre are Sphere and The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008).

James Cameron is sort of the king of the three hour movie. This one does not disappoint. The plot is sustained well through the length of the film. For the time, it had some really cutting edge FX. This film would probably look spectacular in HD. I highly recommend it to everyone (not just Sci-Fi fans).

James Cameron brings you a very good underwater adventure,of a group of people who run an underwater rig. They are cut off from civilization. Once a unknown group of men come down to visit they bring an unwanted item and then the real fun begins. This movie has a solid cast and is very good, check it out.

James Cameron rocks, this movie falls in line with his other films like terminator 2 and aliens, Even though it is like over 3 hours long it is never dull and just a great movie to sit down and dive into another world. James Cameron is always innovative and never disappoints

20,000 feet below ocean surface and humans are swimming using only thin divers suit when they had to exit their pressurized diving spheres. Seemed unbelievable.
