Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson’s first live action film is an adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s dystopian young adult novel of the same name. Amandla Stenberg stars as Ruby Daly, a 16-year-old fugitive trying to outwit an oppressive government in a future where a pandemic has killed most of America’s children and left the few surviving children with psychic powers.~Augustine Chay

My daughter loves the movie, though I have a feeling that the plot is not designed to appeal as much to adults. There are some disturbing scenes involving adults physically assaulting, and even trying to kill children. IF you child is pre-teen, I would suggest that you watch the movie, or at least get a very good idea about the plot before you let you child watch it.
Although it did not do well in the box office, it is still a well made movie. It takes a little of Twilight's clandestine romance, a bit of Hunger Games's us-against-them attitude, and mixes them with Maze Runner's surviving against the odds struggle. It's unappreciated genius that is overshadowed by the dismissal of a worn out genre. The actors are not superstars but still super good. A good collection to go along with other teen dystopian series. Yes. It is a series, too.
The characters are likable. It's kind of a love story with a side of sci-fi. Parts I really enjoyed with other areas that moved to slow.
The effects are good. Plan to read the novel. I hear it's quite different from the movie. But, then again, most movies do differ from the books in general.
I was very curious about this movie, since it is from the same producers of Kin and Stranger Things. I liked it better than Kin. It is an interesting take on a familiar premise, but the pacing is done well and the story, as well as the characters, are engaging. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because it was a little cheesy in some parts, and in other scenes it didn't make a lot of sense. I can't wait for the sequel, if they come around to making one!
I would recommend this to a friend
Rated 4 out of 5 stars
Not bad if it's on sale.
I had wanted to see this movie out of curiosity but didn't want to pay full price. Got it on cyber Monday for a great price. Not a bad movie. Not great, but not terrible. Another attempt to launch a YA franchise. Some fun features on the blu-ray. Comes with a digital download of the film.
