    Synopsis

    The Dirty Dozen
Director Robert Aldrich took what he considered a hopelessly old-fashioned script by Lukas Heller and Nunnally Johnson and fashioned The Dirty Dozen into one of MGM's biggest moneymakers of the 1960s--and the sixth highest-grossing film in the studio's history. Lee Marvin plays Major Reisman, assigned to coordinate a suicide mission on a French chateau held by top Nazi officers. Since no "normal" GI can be expected to volunteer for this mission, Reisman is compelled to draw his personnel from a group of military prisoners serving life sentences. This "dirty dozen" includes a sex pervert (Telly Savalas), a psycho (John Cassavetes), a retarded killer (Donald Sutherland), and the equally malevolent Charles Bronson, Trini Lopez, Jim Brown, and Clint Walker. On the dim promise of receiving pardons if they survive, the criminals undergo a brutal training program, then are marched behind enemy lines dressed as Nazi soldiers, the better to overtake the chateau and kill everyone in it--including the innocent wives and mistresses of the German officers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Warner Brothers has made up for the long wait for a good DVD edition of The Dirty Dozen. This two-disc package is excellent, a major improvement on the previous release. Image quality: A new transfer to anamorphic video. The image is great--very sharp and clear, giving all due emphasis to the gritty quality of the story. In some shots you can see every pore on Lee Marvin's face. A little frightening, I suppose, but worth it. Sound: Very good. The Dirty Dozen won the Oscar for Best Sound Effects, and this DVD's sound does the film justice. Special features: Surprisingly good for a film as far-removed in time as this. The highlight, for me, was the commentary on the film by a few of the surviving actors, a film historian, and Cpt. Dale Dye of Warriors, Inc. Dye's salty commentary is the real jewel of the features on this edition. It's nice to see a movie I've loved since childhood getting the DVD it deserves. If you've been waiting for this DVD--or even if you haven't--pick it up as soon as you can. Highly recommended

I think that "The Dirty Dozen" was one of the greatest classic war/action films of all-time and it was also one of my favorite war/action films of all-time. I have seen and enjoyed this film several times and I also think that "The Dirty Dozen" had a lot of entertaining, exciting and enjoyable action, mystery and suspense including an exciting and original storyline.

Lee Marvin...Charles Bronson...John Cassavetes...Jim Brown...do I need to say more? A WWII film made during Vietnam, there's a clear message being conveyed about the then-political climate. A total guy movie. If you find a woman that likes this one, she's a keeper.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. A Major with an attitude problem and a history of getting things done is told to interview military prisoners with death sentences or long terms for a dangerous mission; To parachute behind enemy lines and cause havoc for the German Generals at a rest house on the eve of D-Day.

This is a older movie that I originally saw in a movie theater and was delighted when I was able to purchase it from BestBuy at a good price so my wife, who has not seen it, can watch it anytime we want.

The cast is first rate and there is no showboating or cutesy banter. Classic war movie with enough humanity to care about outcomes. One of the few movies I didn't find myself getting up and pausing to get something to eat or just take a break ..

This is the type of movie to be considered something a family could view. It is showing how the war really was and was not "sugar-coated". It shows war and what happens, not just killing for killing sake as some of the newer films portray.

A classic WWII film. Lots of fun, lots of action, and lots of extras. The second disc is bustling with all sorts of goodies, including a full movie (the first sequel) The Next Mission. It's lots of fun, and a great buy.
