    Synopsis

    The Sound of Music
One of the most popular movie musicals of all time, The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the Trapp Family Singers. Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a young nun in an Austrian convent who regularly misses her morning prayers because she enjoys going to the hills to sing the title song. Deciding that Maria needs to learn something about the real world before she can take her vows, the Mother Superior (Peggy Wood) sends her off to be governess for the children of the widowed Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). Arriving at the Trapp home, Maria discovers that her new boss is cold and aloof, and his seven children virtual automatons-at least, whenever the Captain is around. Otherwise, the kids are holy terrors, as evidenced by the fact that Maria is the latest in a long line of governesses. But Maria soon ingratiates herself with the children, especially oldest daughter Liesl (Charmian Carr), who is in love with teenaged messenger boy Rolf. As Maria herself begins to fall in love with the Captain, she rushes back to the Abbey so as not to complicate his impending marriage to a glamorous baroness (Eleanor Parker). But the children insist that Maria return, the Baroness steps out of the picture, and Maria and the Captain confirm their love in the song "Something Good." Unhappily, they return home from their honeymoon shortly after the Nazis march into Austria. Already, swastikas have been hung on the Von Trapp ancestral home, and Liesl's boyfriend Rolf has been indoctrinated in the "glories" of the Third Reich. The biggest blow occurs when Von Trapp is called back to active duty in the service of the Fuhrer. The Captain wants nothing to do with Nazism, and he begins making plans to take himself and his family out of Austria. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

After years and years and years of watching The Sound of Music on VHS and DVD, I thought I knew every blade of grass and every gust of wind visible in the movie. How wrong I was! You don't realize how much picture is lost with standard 480p releases until a monumental blu ray transfer like this comes along and provides a home viewing experience that literally feels like seeing the movie for the first time. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best blu ray I own - and not just because The Sound of Music is probably the greatest movie ever made, but because the picture quality is truly that beautiful. And that makes sense, considering the movie was filmed in 70mm and could contain so much more data than ordinary 35mm. Also, from what I understand, the restoration process was taken extremely seriously and done with the highest technology possible. There's a reason why so many artists are pushing blu ray, and it's because for the first time people can experience their creativity and attention to detail, as it was meant to be seen. There is SO much detail in this movie. Seriously, if you loved this movie before you will have your mouth dropped open the entire time you sit through it in high definition. And the Audio quality! I didn't even know it was possible to make ancient audio files sound brand new, but it clearly is. Every song sounds 1000000x better than my old CD soundtracks. Add in surround sound... heavenly. OVERALL: I don't care how many VHS or DVD copies you have of this movie sitting around, you NEED this blu ray. It's not just a restoration, it's a transformation. You cannot have truly experienced The Sound of Music at home until seeing it in 1080p. Not to mention it's cram packed with amazing extras that are actually watchable. In case you can't tell, this BD just makes me so happy. If you appreciate the movie (or bless you, never seen it before) you MUST experience it on BD!

The Courageous Captain and the Spunky Singer

The Sound of Music is much more than a timeless Rogers and Hammerstein musical classic - it is the true story of a brave young lady who is forced to give up her dream of becoming a nun because she is too rambunctious for the cloistered life, but, upon facing up to reality, accepts the true unwavering love of a wealthy captain, but first, she must teach his kids how to be kids! Maria (Julie Andrews) brings joy into the luxurious, but dismal and sorrowful life of the Captain by, against his wishes, teaching his kids to laugh and sing and play outdoors in the mountains, like kids! While much has been said about Andrews' vibrant acting, singing, and dancing, we also appreciate Christopher Plummer's quiet gentle portrayal of the melancholy Captain. Throughout the movie, we see a merry little twinkle in his eye, even when he is trying to be stern with his children, and a soft Mona Lisa smile that, during his wedding, turns to beaming as he watches Maria slowly and eagerly walk towards him! We also are aware of the Captain's fierce loyalty to Austria - where Mozart once lived - and his grief and mourning as he watches it slowly succumb to the unspeakable horrors of the Third Reich - and we admire his courage in his refusal to have anything to do with the evil that has entered Austria. He always does what is right, even if it is painful. One of the saddest parts of the movie is when he sings about a little flower that he may never see again in his homeland, which, also, he may never see again. Yet Maria's love for him empowers him to flee with her and the children, and, because of their love and their courage, we cheer as we see them successfully trekking into Switzerland - and safety! I often watch The Sound of Music in order to feel good, but this movie is much more than something delightful and pleasant - it is the true story of valor and courage and triumph, through the power of love!

What is there to say that has not been already said about this classic masterpiece of a musical? The Sound of Music is nothing less than a heart-warming experience for any individual and/or family out there. For those who are not familiar with the plot of the film, it is about a far-from-perfect nun whose task is to heal a household, consisting of seven children and a former Naval captain, that has lost its joy. She learns a great number of things about the children, about the captain, and about herself throughout the movie. With her personality consisting of finding the best in all things, she is able to bring the family closer together through song, care, and creativity. It's comedic, it's romantic, it's historic, and it's simply wonderful. This remastered film on Blu-ray is just phenomenal! The textures, clothing fabric, and green pastures almost look three-dimensional due to state-of-the-art digital restoration. Sound is in 7.1 DTS-HD with the feature film in 1080p HD. There are plenty of special features, and the way that they are presented is outstanding. It has a nostalgic, feel-good vibe to it. Included is a virtual tour of the von Trapp household and Salzburg - gorgeous! One can't go wrong here. The Sound of Music on Blu-ray is a must-have for all those who enjoy the best musical presentation they could ever experience sitting in front of a TV.

Review by a 35 year old movie fan.

I bought this movie on bluray because my wife loves this movie and so does her grandma. She had it on VHS and I thought this was a nice upgrade. Let me start by saying I have never sat through this movie in its entirety once. This is the most gorgeous restoration of a movie from this time period I have ever seen. Both my wife and I were blown away at how good it looks on 1080p HD TV. On that alone this is a buy because of the music and astounding picture. Past that this is a classic that my 3, 5, & 7 year old loved. I can't recommend this purchase enough. I paid $17 over the holiday but I would recommend paying double that price if you had too.

What words can be said about "The Sound of Music" that would adequately describe it in all its radiant, rich, singing and dancing glory? I could scarcely add anything new or original to the 50 years worth of accolades and reviews that have praised this wonderful film. Just suffice it to say that I've been watching it ever since my grandmother introduced me to it when I was a child, and throughout the repeated viewings in all the ensuing years it has never lost its power and thrall over me. To watch "The Sound of Music" is to surrender yourself and return to a time and place, a bygone era of filmmaking that is long gone. It's like receiving a big, comforting embrace over and over from Maria herself.

In a day and age where films are infused with massive amounts of CGI to save money, its nice to be able to fall back on the classic films and the style with which they were made to regain perspective on the visual splendor of old Hollywood. The Sound of Music blends the rhythmically lyrical power of a musical with the basis of a true to life event for a grandiose presentation of entertainment that has lasted the test of time in the annals of enduring and watchable films that holds its own as one of the most endearing classics of all time.

If your a musical lover like myself, then make sure you add this to your movie collection. It's a great classic, with awesome musical numbers, and beautiful visuals. Loved the movie but didn't own, so finally bought myself a copy with my $5 reward certificate. Not only is it a Blu ray, but it also has a digital copy, which you can put on your phone or iPad and watch on the go. Great addition. You won't want to miss this one.
