    Synopsis

    The War of the Roses
Divorce lawyer Danny De Vito warns his prospective client that the story he's about to tell isn't a pretty one, but the client listens with eager intensity -- as do the folks out there in the movie in the audience. The War of the Roses can best be described as a slapstick tragedy concerning the decline and literal fall of a marriage. After 17 years, Oliver (Michael Douglas) and Barbara (Kathleen Turner) Rose want a divorce. Not for this couple is there anything resembling a "civilized understanding": Barbara wants their opulent house, and Oliver isn't about to part with the domicile. Barbara nails the basement door shut while Oliver is downstairs, Oliver disrupts Barbara's fancy party by taking aim at the catered dinner, Barbara lays waste to Oliver's sports car....and so it goes, culminating in a disastrous showdown around, about and under the living room's fancy chandelier. DeVito and screenwriter Michael Leeson never let us forget that the couple's self-indulgent imbroglio exacts an awful price upon their children (Sean Astin and Heather Fairfield). The War of the Roses was adapted from the novel by Warren Adler. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Turner-Douglas team has always been a favorite of mine ever since Romancing the Stone. But don't expect this to be a happily-ever-after movie just because the movie starts out that way. This is worth watching over and over just to see for yourself where things begin to go sour or where the point-of-no-return occurred. Don't let this happen to your marriage; so work on it however you can. This Bitter-Love-Hate relationship gets intense... disastrously intense until the bitter end.

An absolutely hysterical movie, 'War of the Roses' is a film that will make everyone think twice before saying "I do." Great acting, a superb script, and excellent direction make this film the masterpiece it is. Highly recommended, especially to couples...The dvd itself is an outstanding special edition, loaded with lots of fun and interesting bonus content.

Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas are amazing. They play a married couple who have lost touch with each other and are going through a divorce. Both go to extreme lengths to get the other out of the home they have built. It makes you wonder when enough is enough in a marriage.

The final film in the unofficial Douglas/Turner/DeVito trilogy. DeVito's style is unique, Turner and Douglas' chemistry is great. The special features are light but insightful. If your a fan of DeVito's work and haven't seen this movie yet, pull the trigger.

DeVito's direction is distinctively odd (with a lot of low-angle shots looking up at things), enjoyably mischievous and always somehow mindful that there may be, at the heart of all this comic mayhem, something substantial going on.

This is one of the darker comedies out there, but just like "Where's Poppa?" it's a really great one. Check it out. You won't be disappointed. Special Features on this disc are equally great. Have fun!

Michael Douglas and Danny Devito are amazing in this film. War of the Roses is a dark comedy, and is not for everyone. However, if your into dark comedy, this film is just right for you.
