Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman), a brilliant but troublesome New York actor, has managed to alienate every producer on both coasts. Michael's agent George Fields (Sydney Pollack) can't even get his client a commercial since Michael complained that the tomato he was playing wasn't properly motivated. "You were a tomato!" screams George in desperation, adding that Michael is so obnoxious that he will probably never work again. Dorsey thinks otherwise; when he hears of an opening on a popular soap opera, he applies for the job--even though the job is for a woman. Posing as "Miss Dorothy Michaels," Michael wins the part and becomes a widely-known actress. Yet complications ensue when Michael falls for his co-star Julie (Jessica Lange, in an Oscar-winning performance) but, as Dorothy, is courted by Julie's widowed father (Charles Durning). Michael ultimately finds that his disguise as a woman has made him a better man. One of the classic comedies of the 1980s, Tootsie's gender-bending premise boasts a screenplay by Larry Gelbart and Murray Schisgal, and by a host of memorable supporting comic performances from Dabney Coleman, Teri Garr, George Gaynes, and Bill Murray. Future Oscar-winner Geena Davis makes her screen debut as a daytime drama queen, which indeed she had been before Tootsie came along.~Hal Erickson

This is a classic movie - an all-time great: great theme, great subject - dealing with the way that men approach and deal with women!! Dustin Hoffman is superb!
Also, thanks Best Buy for excellent shipping! The movie came in perfect condition!
This is another movie that was so popular in the '90s that it is now selling on many websites at grossly elevated prices. Best Buy had the lowest price and the shipping was easy to track. I received the DVD very quickly and it was in perfect condition.
Don't call me 'TOOTSIE ', says Hoffman, in drag...
Out of work 'obnoxious' actor, Hoffman, takes the only job he could get after he auditioned for the part in 'drag'! BUT now.... he has to continue his charade, as an actress, to keep the job.
Sounds like an easy chore for the long-time out of work actor. But it gets complicated after he falls in love with his daytime soap opera co-star(Jessica Lange) and then, her father(Charles Durning) develops a crush on him. And let's not forget his long-suffering girlfriend(Teri Garr) who has been trying to figure out just what is going on.
You'll love this movie but just don't call him 'Tootsie', as Dabney Coleman came to regret.
If you don't have this in your library you don't know just what you are missing. In some parts it is hysterically funny and other parts poignant, then even some silly, you gotta have that! I watch this one and enjoy it each time. I'm glad it is in my library and you will you. I look for overall entertainment rather than being a critic. I want to get my monies worth and have an entertaining time. And Tootsie does it for me.
