Widely considered to be an expensive failure, Waterworld was an epic vehicle for Kevin Costner, who starred in and co-produced the film, with his friend Kevin Reynolds as director. It was based on a 1986 screenplay by Peter Rader and cost an estimated $235 million, more than any film in history up to that time. Costner eventually fired Reynolds and directed the last few scenes himself. The story was filmed in Hawaii, using several artificial islands, and is set in an apocalyptic future, after global warming has melted the polar ice caps and flooded civilization. The Mariner (Costner) is one of the human beings who has adapted by growing gills. The survivalist lives on a boat on which he is growing a precious tomato plant. He tries to sell the plant and its dirt to the residents of an artificial island built of industrial waste. They imprison him when they discover that he's a mutant with gills. But the island is attacked by the Smokers, a group of oil-guzzling raiders on jet skis headed by the Deacon (Dennis Hopper). The Mariner escapes with Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her daughter Enola (Tina Majorino). Back at sea, the Smokers repeatedly attack, using planes and boats, until they kidnap Enola. Enola's back is tattooed with a map showing how to get to Dryland, the last unflooded area on Earth. But Deacon, who needs to get to Dryland to replenish the Smokers' oil supply, can't immediately decipher it.~Michael Betzold

Waterworld done masterfully in 4k . Big fan of Kevin Costner this one of his movies , cinematics action stunts are truly amazing as this movie puts the effects of global warming into perspective . Picture quality is phenomenal as you won’t see any grainy scene as some poorly remastered movies . 5 stars for this one as I enjoyed it watching in on my home theater , very vivid movie.
Boutique labels like Shout Factory need to take note: if you want to charge a premium price you've got to earn it with a product that shows both expertise and effort. Not some faux remaster that's really just been tweaked for wannabe videophiles and/or a collection of short interviews from has-been actors who are likely just to be thrilled to be getting any attention at all now that their careers are long over.
Arrow has not only put together as definitive a home video offering as I've ever seen, but they've done so showing a care and legitimate love for film that rivals the best from Criterion, but included a lot more swag. If you're a fan of Waterworld, this is without question THE edition to get!
If the world were to really ever become this waterworld, this movie is a nice depiction of how things may really be! I think this is a great movie and it is fun to watch but beware, it is definitely an adult flick psychologically. Some scenes may be difficult for a younger mind to decipher or understand!
Kevin Costner’s personal demeanor works really well in this role. Great character selection in the cast. Love the storyline!
The Picture and audio quality of this groundbreaking movie just keeps getting better. The Arrow Bluray release has a ton of extras, but the 4K item is a treat. A cult favorite that was just savaged on initial release, but I always loved. I'm glad that so many people seem to be jumping on this super guilty pressure.
Dennis Hopper almost pulls off a Jack Nicholson Joker (not quite) by stealing the show as the most over the top villain ever put on film. Plot Holes to drive an aircraft carrier through, but it's just so much fun who cares.
Surprisingly good re-release of an old movie. This 4K version adds lots of improved clarity and color. I put the movie on just to check out any improvements in video quality over the original bluray version and ended up watching the entire movie. The clarity of the 4K release is captivating.
An interesting take on global warming gives us a silly premise but a pretty good story. I have not seen this movie since it was on Laserdisc over 20 years ago. Now with a new 4K transfer, Waterworld comes back to life. Kevin Costner has a great performance as the unnamed Mariner. The 4K video and Dolby Atmos sound track deliver.
Great audio and picture. This is still a great movie. I am glad to have this great movie in my 4k collection. I have 100 4k movies. I know you didnt need to know that but i am making fun of all the dorks that write dumb reviews.
