      Spec's Misleading

This drive is great for what it is. Cheap [hopefully reliable] storage. I purchased this drive to consolidate 5 other hard drives (external and internal) and had no issues getting everything I wanted loaded on it. I regularly back-up and retire my hard drives about once every 3 to 5 years. I've had 10 Western Digital hard drives over the years and zero failures. I wouldn't want a drive like this (5400 RPM, 2 year warranty) for everyday use, constantly saving and loading - but just to fill it up and have it available for reading of individual files I have every confidence that it will exceed its 2 year warranty (lifespan). As the review summary indicates, the spec's on BestBuy.com state this drive is "color category: Black" which is misleading. I went to the local Best Buy thinking this was a steal on a WD-Black hard drive, but of course it is the "Green" lower tier drive. Was disappointed to say the least, but purchased anyway because it would suit my need and didn't want to delay my project. Took off one star for this reason.

Good reviews on Best Buy summary sold me on this item. There were some negative reviews, I thought maybe faulty installation or some reason other than bad product. BUT... first drive I bought would not load operating system, fought with it 10 days then returned. Second drive loaded first try. I guess there are lemons made anywhere so can be expected. Best Buy stood behind return policy, I traded bad drive for new in 10 minutes, took home and had computer operating within a couple hours. Since I had no diagnostics to figure out if first drive was actually BAD I worked with it far longer than I should have. Thumbs up to Best Buy for standing behind product with no hassle return.

This WD Desktop Everyday SATA 4TB internal hard drive, was chosen to replace an the original 2 TB HP drive, it notably doubled the total storage space to 4 TB, I have had failures in the past using HP drives and Seagate drives as well. This new WD dive seemed quieter that my old drives and overall operation was smooth as well once I had the new drive installed, the drive spins at a 1/3 lower rev rate than the old drive it replaced. So the lower revs and lower noise will hopefully produce less friction and that should lead to a longer disc life. I even bought a second WD 4TB drive and had it installed in this new desktop, for even more storage because I liked the WD operational properties, I now have doubled my total storage capacity to 8 TB. Until SSD drives are available with this type of capacity at a more reasonable cost, I think this is the only way to go.

These Blue label drives were installed into HP Workstations (z840 and z640) and were easy to install and work fine. I am using these drives to store HD TV recordings. The 4TB drive should store close to 420 1-hour HD shows and the 6TB drives about 640 1-hour HD shows or about 4400 standard TV 1-hour recordings. I just wish best buy would stock the Black label drives (5 year warranty models). These spinning hard drives transfer data a well under the 6gb/s SATA interface rating.(you need SSD to get those speeds then of course you may want pcie interface for another 10% or so bump in speed). I see on Windows 10 Performance (Task manager) the 4TB has 140mb/s read and 125mb/s write rates (to/from SSD drive on same SATA bus).

Overall this Kram has performed as it should so far, it has been installed less than a month. However this would not work with the computer I originally intended for it to work with. It being an older computer (Dell Optiplex 990 DT) I3 processor with 8 gigs of RAM, running windows 7 home, I thought would be able to handle 4TB. However due to the chipset of the processor it would not recognize anything over a 2TB hard drive. No matter how I tried to resize the partions it would not read the 4TB. I ended up putting this in my main computer and dumping a portable 4TB hard drive onto it and using that. Just a word to the wise, if it is a older computer you are trying to put this into that you verify the chipset will recognize it.

I purchased this drive as replacement for the three 250GB drives (setup in a RAID 0 Array) in the rebuild of my existing PC. I've been using it for a while now and have had absolutely 0 issues with the drive. I will admit the first drive I received (I had it shipped) did fail on me (more than likely shipping damage as the drive was improperly packaged when it shipped), but the 2nd one has had absolutely 0 issues. I've been using Western Digital drives for a number of years now (well over 15+ years) and have never had a problem with them. Their warranty service is top notch and their drives have a solid build quality.

For the record, I'm a Seagate user, I've used Seagate since before IDE hard drives. I wanted a 4 TB hard drive internal for my secondary drive that I could work on. I do Photography and working from a Network drive is extremely slow. I've been hearing some very good things about Western Digital so I though I'd go ahead and purchase this one. I must admit it has met all of my expectations, it's fast, quiet and hasn't faltered a bit. I'm transferring most of my images over and I've now transffered over 2TB, it hasn't gotten hot and it works like a champ. I'm really happy I purchased it .

Exactly what you would expect from getting a SATA hard drive. As a Mac user, it's important to go to the WD website for some instructions on how to format this drive so that it works--mostly because the Mac OS hides some of the features you will need to use in getting it ready for your storage uses. I've got a lot of WD hard drives, and I've never had a problem with them. I've been using this drive for a while now, and I have no complaints. Tons of storage, good price, and reliable. Best Buy has good prices on these drives too.
