Wishmaster/Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies [DVD]

  • SKU: 4723534
  • Release Date: 03/02/2002
  • Rating: R
Artisan's double feature Wishmaster / Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies, about the evil nature of wishes, includes both films, one a special edition and the other a basic, bare-bones edition. Both movies are presented in anamorphic widescreen and look very good. The original Wishmaster tends to look much more clear than the second film, though both transfers are basically clean and crisp. The audio presentation includes Dolby Digital 5.1 for both films. The music, effects, and dialogue are clean and presentable, with the original utilizing the rear speakers more than the sequel. Wishmaster includes some promising extra features, including a very enlightening commentary track by director Robert Kurtzman, second unit director Greg Nicataro, and screenwriter Peter Atkins. The track is light, though tends to lean more towards the technical side of the film's history and production. Also included on Wishmaster is a very informative half-hour documentary on the making of the film, featuring interviews with director Robert Kurtzman, actor Andrew Divoff (who plays the evil wish-granting Djinn), and special effects supervisor Tom Rainone. Finally, an international and domestic theatrical trailer is included (full frame), as well as production notes and cast and crew information. The Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies extra features consist solely of an anamorphic theatrical trailer, as well as the typical production notes and cast and crew information found on most discs. Wishmaster 2 was not half as popular as its predecessor, so the exclusion of multiple extra features is not surprising. Overall, this is a very nice package from Artisan featuring two gory films that should delight hardcore horror fans.

An evil genie, the Djinn (Andrew Divoff), escapes from an ancient statue and wreaks havoc in this horror film from director Robert Kurtzman. The devious Djinn can regain human form permanently if he grants someone three wishes. The Djinn at first is trapped in a statue, which falls and cracks open when a drunken worker unloads it from a ship. The genie is inside a precious gem that a puzzled pawnbroker gives to university gemologist Josh (Tony Crane). The Djinn kills Josh, and Josh's friend and colleague Alexandra Amberson (Tammy Lauren), who had been resisting Josh's romantic advances, sets out to find the killer. She follows a trail of carnage, and she soon learns the truth about the genie from anthropologist Wendy Derleth (Jenny O'Hara). The Djinn presents itself to Alexandra, who resists his seductive offers to grant wishes, but then the fiend sets his sights on Shannon (Wendy Benson), Alexandra's younger sister. The genie makes his final stand to grant a third wish at a party where antiquities collector Anthony Beaumont (Robert Englund) is displaying the statue. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies
In this sequel to 1997's Wishmaster, an evil genie is released from captivity in a museum and quickly takes human form, where he starts granting wishes to the weak-willed in exchange for their souls. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I used to own this a while ago, and I really enjoyed it because it was so Tongue-in-Cheek.............The actor who played the evil Genie was priceless, and the FX on the first WM were great................Wish I could say the same for the 2nd one.............Not as good..............Skip it and just pick up the first one.............You'll dig it!!!

    one of my favorites

It was a really good movie, I like how tricky the wish master was with granting each person wish. I like the wish master costume, it makes him look really spooky. They picked the perfect guy to play him as a man as well.
