A: I don't know how discerning a music person you are but I've been listening to music with hi-fi equipment for many years and using cd players since 1985 starting with a Sony model that was around $600 then. I have to say that this cd player with a built in DAC and price point is the best sounding player in it's class. The USB feature is especially nice to play a lot of music I downloaded from my large cd collection.Just make sure you upgrade the firmware from Yamaha's website to a blank USB drive and install on the cd player. I believe its the 1.53 version. Depending on the amp and speakers you are using you can tweak the sound with your tone controls. Sound can depend on how the music cd was produced in the sound studio so each cd may sound more detailed and louder than others that are older and not as detailed. Hope this helps some. Yamaha makes great equipment. I have been a fan since 1980.
A: It has a power cord for a 120 volt outlet but no batteries.

I have never heard my CDs sound better in any player I have ever owned, but "Huston we have a problem!" So many of my CDs were skipping, and the discs looked basically ok. I knew that back in the day, the CD players had error correction and I never had an issue with them skipping. I was just about to return the player to Best Buy, but I read a review that said you must install the latest version of the firmware (version 1.53). It was easy to find the firmware update and instructions on Yamaha's website. I was having some trouble installing the update and finally figured out that 1) the USB drive must have no other files 2) the firmware must be properly de-compressed and 3) the firmware with the extension .cdp must not be in a folder. As soon as I did this it installed perfectly. Once installed there were no more skips in CDs that did so previously. Yamaha has done a great job with this player. It is easy to use and the CDs have a pure and clean sound. All my CDs so great at any volume level. I am hearing things in the music that I never heard before. Thanks Best Buy for making this available and shipping it for free!

CDs and CD players are not yet dead. And if you want to start out with collecting CDs (since vinyls are expensive), this is the unit that I would recommend. It’s affordable, user friendly and straightforward. The built-in DAC gives an added “umph” to it. So I’m still deciding if I still should get an integrated amplifier to complete my set-up.
