Q: Can you only use whole coffee beans or does this have an option to use ground beans?
A: Yes, but you wouldn't put the grounds into the hopper. You first touch the icon of what you want to make with this machine. Pour the coffee grounds into your portofilter, and slide into the left side of the machine and pull the handle down to tamp (squish grounds perfectly). Then just move on to the next step.
A: I would say for the same reason some buy their coffee from Starbucks and not the gas station. It's a much better overall experience. After 10 years my $700 model gave out and I decided to upgrade to the $1200 one. I asked the same question and had my doubts as well. They both do the same thing but it's how they do it. It's a much smoother process, more efficient, and less mess. The coffee comes out perfect each time because it monitors the temp, water flow, grind size, etc. Both are great machines but if I were to look back 5-10 years from now, I will be much happier that I spent the extra $$ for a much better overall experience.
Q: Does this machine also make coffee?
A: If you mean drip coffee, no. It is strictly an espresso machine. The closest drink to drip coffee that can be made with the machine would be an Americano.

Q: Does the machine have a hot water setting or dispense hot water through the wand for hot tea?
A: You can dispense hot water any time thru the nozzle (not the milk nozzle). You can also set the number of ounces.
A: I just got the black truffle one and even shows cold drinks on the box and I do not have the cold drinks… kind of frustrating since Breville probably won’t do anything about it even if it’s registered with them. They are just going to say “sorry, should’ve bought it from us directly”
