About this product
Widor's cycle of ten organ symphonies underwent profound development and transformation over many years. Classical elements became more obviously virtuosic and, by the time of these Op.42 symphonies, his musical language had become monumental. Symphony No. 5 in F minor is world famous for a single movement, it's concluding Toccata, a moto perpetuo of astonishing brilliance, but the whole work is imbued with structural and musical genius. Striking rhythms, dynamic contrasts and technical roulades mark out Symphony No. 6 in G minor. Also included is a graceful movement from Symphony No. 8 (8.574207) that Widor later omitted. Album Tracks 1. Symphony No. 5 in F minor, Op. 42, No. 1~Allegro vivace 2. Symphony No. 5 in F minor, Op. 42, No. 1~Allegro cantabile 3. Symphony No. 5 in F minor, Op. 42, No. 1~Andantino quasi allegretto 4. Symphony No. 5 in F minor, Op. 42, No. 1~Adagio 5. Symphony No. 5 in F minor, Op. 42, No. 1~Toccata Allegro 6. Franz Anton Hoffmeister occupied an important place in Viennese musical and cultural life. He was much respected as a - his firm published works by Mozart and Haydn, and he was friendly with Beethoven - but also as a composer. He wrote at least eight operas, a substantial number of symphonies, and a large amount of music for the flute, a popular instrument amongst the wealthy amateurs of the time. He also wrote expressively and rewardingly for the piano, which had a similarly wide audience.Given Franz Anton Hoffmeister's pivotal role in Viennese musical life, as both and composer, it is not surprising that he wrote a significant body of music for the piano. The sonatas are not merely the preserve of the sophisticated amateurs for whom they were written. As his contemporaries observed, Hoffmeister's music showed original and expressive features, and the sonatas which survive in numerous handwritten copies were some of his most popular and admired works of the time. Tallis began his career as organist at the Benedictine Priory at Dover, followed by similar service at Waltham Abbey until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1540. He was then organist at Canterbury Cathedral and in 1543 became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, a position he retained until his death. Like Byrd, his pupil, he seems to have remained loyal to the old religion, while continuing to enjoy royal favor. Tallis wrote a quantity of Latin church music and contributed also to the reformed English liturgy, in some cases adapting earlier Latin compositions. One of his most remarkable achievements is the 40-voice Spem in alium. His setting of the Latin Holy Week liturgy Lamentations represents his work at it's height. The composer's name is widely known through the metrical psalm tune known as Tallis's Canon, a setting of God, grant we grace. Album Tracks 1. Sanctus 2. Credo 3. Agnus Dei 4. Agnus Dei
