A: There is a loooong theory behind this, but in VERY short words. Backups has 1 clearly stated number which is given in VA (volt ampere) ex 500VA, but computer devices comes with a power measure in Watts. Before continuing VA is NOT the same as Watt. You should find in the backup/UPS user manual to get the real power value in Watts, don't feel sad if you don't find it, sometimes its normal. If you don't find it then assume the worst case multiply the VA measure by 0.6 factor, so in our example 500 VA x 0.6 = 300W, so this UPS can deliver up to 300W at this point all you have to do is go to the back part of your monitor, PC, and modem get the power units in Watts that are always clearly stated then you sum all of them and they should be LOWER than or 300W. Warning: UPSs have 2 types of power connectors 1 type is battery backup and other is surge protection only. All this explanation applies to the battery backup side. Lets say you need to connect a printer that will always go to the surge protection side and NEVER to the battery side.
Q: Is it safe to plug a PC into this that contains a 850w power supply?
A: NO, if using for battery backup power supply. Rule of thumb for UPS is 1.6 times the watt load for ALL equipment plugged into the UPS battery backup side. Even though your computer is not likely using 850 watts all of the time (can only be determined by using an amp probe and converting to watts) you will have to back up at minimum the monitor also to be able to safely close all programs and properly shut down the computer and monitor. This may take several minutes or you could loose data &/or damage the protected equipment if you overload the UPS. If you want to be safe, but do not know the actual watts being used I'd suggest using the rated watts of all equipment plugged into the UPS battery side times 1.6. You should properly shut down that equipment when your home power is lost as a UPS is normally used to allow time for safe shut down, not to keep working with a computer for hours on battery backup power. These units battery power is also a simulated sine wave and I do not operate computers for any duration, just have the battery power to safely shut down my equipment. If you want to continue working you should look at an inverter generator that produces an actual true sine wave........a lot more costly option.
