About this product

Flying Cakes has nothing really to do with cakes; it consists more of musical impressions from different places around the world. The expression, which became the name of the quartet, was given by the band leader Benjamin Geyer. He depicted it in his adventurous journey through India, randomly sprayed onto a wall. Flying Cakes draws back to jazz but drives off to another journey; leaving the traditional patterns behind onward to a merge of different genres. These different characteristics of genres create new compositions. The four musicians, Nils Wrasse, Benjamin Geyer, Thomas Kolarczyk, and Philip Dornbusch mingle together the perceptions of each of them and transform them skillfully into music. Flying Cakes is an audible and glittering journey around the world. A journey full of euphoria, pain, resistance and beauty.

Recorded on Victor and Decca in the 1920s and 30s, Sleepy John Estes was a leading exponent of the Memphis blues style. These recordings capture the distinctive sound of Yank Rachel's legato mandolin lines and Jab Jones' rhythmic piano accompaniment, as well as Estes' skill at singing the narrative blues.

Only a few, famous jazz bassists have ever gone beyond the limitations of their instruments and sought new opportunities on the cello. The cellist Valentin Radutiu turns the tables to show how well the cello suits jazz - at times taking the role of the traditional string bass, at others a resonant tenor guitar while at others giving it's voice wings. The repertoire on Remembering The Rain A Jazz View, comes mainly from the InchGreat American SongbookInch, supplementing that glorious heritage with standards by John Lewis (MJQ) and Bill Evans, both of whom had their own anchors in classical music as well.
