About this product
The long life of Don Pietro Gnocchi remains largely a mystery. We know the precise periods during which he worked at the Cathedral in Brescia, first as Maestro di Cappella, from 16th June 1723, and then as organist, from 10th April 1762 until his death; but apart from this, biographers seem to have simply passed back and forth what little information they possessed without reference to it's source. As such, may aspects of his musical life are still to be determined his early musical education in Alfianello and Bresica, the subsequent move to Venice and the Basilica of St. Marks, pupil of a Maestro di Cappella, and the exhausting travelling to the courts of Europe where he was very highly acclaimed, together with his Inchtrusty companion, excellent player upon the violin.Inch It is, then, the music that reveals the man, and Gnocchi has left us with a considerable musical output, music for the most part intended for the church, as one would expect of a capable musician, careful of providing the Cappella with the compositions required to accompany the various functions. The Archive of the Brescia cathedral in particular overflows with the manuscripts of masses, psalms and antiphonies that allow us to testify to the talent and creative fervor of Gnocchi, a composer consciously tied to a contrapuntal style a cappella, but one who nevertheless did not disdain from making frequent musical forays of a less austere manner with the help of instruments and solo voices. The present features his Sonate a tre, performed by the capable musicians of Brixia Musicalis. Album Tracks 1. Sonata XIII in re minore oboe, violino, violoncello, arciliuto & clavicembalo~Grave 2. Sonata XIII in re minore oboe, violino, violoncello, arciliuto & clavicembalo~Allegro 3. Sonata XIII in re minore oboe, violino, violoncello, arciliuto & clavicembalo~Larghetto 4. Sonata XIII

Giovanni Benedetto Platti was born in northern Italy and spent some of his youth in Venice, where his father was a violetta player at St Mark's, before he received his court appointment as an oboist and violinist at the court chapel of Würzburg in 1722. Two years later, the music-loving and cello-playing count of Schönborn, Rudolf Franz Erwein, had managed to secure him as a musician for his own household at his small residence in the county of Wiesentheid. Platti composed - in addition to his ordinary ouptut for worldly and spiritual occasions - for the cello, the Count's favourite instrument a dozen sonatas, 28 concerti, 6 duets and over 21 trio sonatas in which the two melodic instruments are not playing at the same height. The music collection of the counts of Schönborn-Wiesentheid very probably consists of Erwein's personal music library and is today an important historical music archive. Radio Antiqua present in partly world premiere six trio sonatas from that collection, which the count could presumably have played with Platti. Album Tracks 1. Sonata for Violin, Violoncello and Basso Continuo in D Major WD 681 2. Sonata for Oboe, Bassoon and Basso Continuo in C minor WD 695 3. Sonata for Violin, Violoncello and Basso Continuo in E minor WD 677 4. Sonata for Violin, Bassoon and Basso Continuo in C minor WD 694 5.
