About This Item

Brand new 1/72 scale diecast model of the Grumman F-14A Tomcat Fighter Aircraft "Bicentennial Scheme, VF-124" (1976) from the United States Navy, part of the "Air Power Series" by Hobby Master, comes in a brand new box and features detailed exterior and true-to-scale detail. The model includes a pilot figure, has an opening canopy, detachable ordnance loads, detachable landing gear, and a display stand. Constructed from diecast metal and plastic, it provides durability and a heavy, realistic feel, with realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels, and surface details that faithfully replicate the real aircraft. Dimensions are approximately 10.25 inches in length with a 10.75-inch wingspan. The Grumman F-14A Tomcat, Bureau Number 159616, became one of the most visually striking aircraft in the U.S. Navy when it received the special “Bicentennial Scheme” while assigned to Fighter Squadron 124 (VF-124) in 1976, celebrating the United States’ 200th anniversary with bold red, white, and blue markings on the fuselage and tail. VF-124, known as the “Gunfighters,” was a Fleet Replacement Squadron responsible for training new Tomcat crews in both air-to-air and air-to-ground tactics, ensuring aviators were ready for operational deployment. Although 159616 primarily served as a training aircraft, the F-14A was a supersonic, carrier-based air superiority fighter capable of long-range interception using the AWG-9 radar and AIM-54 Phoenix missile system, and aircraft like 159616 were essential in preparing crews for potential Cold War confrontations through simulated combat exercises, intercepts, and hands-on experience with the Tomcat’s variable-sweep wings, advanced avionics, and multi-role capabilities. During its time with VF-124, 159616 also participated in ceremonial flyovers, public displays, and carrier deck demonstrations, showcasing the F-14A’s agility, speed, and visual presence, contributing significantly to naval aviation by training pilots who would later serve in fleet squadrons across global operations. This 1:72 scale model captures the vivid red, white, and blue livery and sleek lines of one of the Navy’s most iconic fighters, celebrating the legacy of VF-124 and the Tomcat program, making it a striking centerpiece for any scale model aviation display.
