Built in early 1940 by Vickers Supermarine, P9374 was assigned to No. 92 Squadron RAF during the early stages of the Battle of France. On May 24, 1940, Pilot Officer Peter Cazenove flew the aircraft on a combat mission over Dunkirk, providing air cover for the British Expeditionary Force as it faced encirclement by German forces. In the course of action, the Spitfire was hit by enemy fire and force-landed on the beach near Calais, where it remained buried in sand for more than 40 years. The aircraft was lost for decades, until a combination of archival research and shifting sands led to its dramatic recovery in 1980. Preserved remarkably well in the salt and sand, P9374 was one of the few surviving Spitfires that had not been reassembled from multiple aircraft—an incredibly rare example of a combat-veteran, all-original Mk.Ia.
