A: The only pre-filer you need to replace, is the odor reducing one ( one that came wrapped). If you use the other one, all you need to do is wash it. I used a small amount of shampoo and it did the trick.
A: The pre-filter is an activated carbon impregnated foam filter. It's primary purpose is to assist in filtering odors, but it also catches pet hair, lint, and bigger particulates. This filter will fall apart if you attempt to wash it. The washable internal filter (they are both accessed via the removable back panel) is an electrostatic filter designed to capture smaller particles of things like dander and pollen. Just a tip: if you replace the pre-filter, make certain that it is pressed back under the retaining tabs on the rear grille. If you don't, it will make replacing the cover impossible as there is no excess room.
