Melding traditional Zimbabwean music, American jazz, and an unmistakable dose of the Pacific Northwest, Heat Wave celebrates the culmination of it's diverse roots. Born during the pandemic as Israeli saxophonist Idit Shner, Zimbabwean vocalist & percussionist John Mambira, and the Oregon-bred rhythm section of pianist Torrey Newhart, bassist Garrett Baxter and drummer Ken Mastrogiovanni, formed a Inchparent podInch to allow their children to attend virtual school together while the parents jammed in the living room. Realizing that put together, the music created was both global and hyper-local-truly American, in the best sense of the word-it provided a thrilling artistic escape from the times and exciting possibilities for the future.

Saxophonist Idit Shner is the embodiment of a modern jazz musician both forward looking and steeped in tradition; simultaneously international, local and personal. Her new recording Tuesday's Blues displays all those qualities and more. Five of the compositions here derive from music (ancient, modern, sacred, secular) that Shner heard growing up in Israel. All have been melodically, rhythmically and harmonically transformed by her, in the best tradition of jazz. Featuring pianist Stefan Karlsson, bassist Mike League and drummer Steve Pruitt.

A fiery and dedicated improviser and composer, saxophonist Idit Shner's latest quartet recording highlights her rich and ongoing relationship with pianist Josh Hanlon and drummer Stockton Helbing, which dates back to the early 2000's when Idit was working on her Doctorate at the University of North Texas. Along with bassist James Driscoll, the quartet tackles a program of Idit's compositions, all based in the jazz tradition but with influences ranging from traditional melodies & rhythms from Zimbabwe, to classical Arabic music, to the Latin-tinged grooves of McCoy Tyner from his early '70s recordings.
