Idit Shner - Tuesday's Blues - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

... an excellent group of players jamming, meshing together fluidly, and the energy is consistently high... Shner's solos can twinkle and extend like Coltrane or honk and squawk like Big Jay McNeely... All Music Guide. With her recorded projects ranging from post-bop arrangements of Israeli songs from youth to commissioned new works for classical saxophone, Idit Shner has been a tireless advocate for 'making things happen' since receiving her DMA from the University of North Texas 15 years ago. On the faculty of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Idit continues to inspire others while using the city's central jazz gathering spot, The Jazz Station, to workshop ideas and perform regularly with her quartet. Recorded in June, 2019, Live at the Jazz Station captures the joy and exuberance heard each night there, with a high-energy group of friends exploring a favorite standard or their own compositions. From pianist/organist Torrey Newhart's hard-swinging, B-3 led InchShake it Till You Hear it Sizzle,Inch to bassist Garrett Baxter's haunting InchPresent,Inch or drummer Ken Mastrogiovanni's loose and swinging closer, InchArtificial Flavors,Inch Shner lights a fire, making the idea of presenting a live album more than just a good idea. Inch... confident and assured. (Shner's) bringing a welcome liveliness to post-bop jazz... Inch - EMUSIC

Wu Hen is the sophomore album from Peckham visionary Kamaal Williams an invitation to elevate to a higher state. Cinematic strings from Miguel-Atwood Ferguson and virtuoso saxophone from Quinn Mason are textural additions that make for a deeper, multi-layered experience than previous releases. Bringing groove back to the forefront, Wu Hen oscillates between celestial jazz, funk, rap and R&B reinforced with the rugged beat-heavy attitude of grime, jungle, house and garage - a self-styled fusion Kamaal describes as Wu Funk. New players on this record include LA's Greg Paul on drums (of Kalayst Collective), Rick Leon James on bass, Quinn Mason on saxophone alongside vocal features from Kaytranada collaborator Lauren Faith.

... these five are original... Shner is undoubtedly a John Coltrane disciple, albeit with a personal sound... Together they bring an exciting cocktail that properly tightens the links between Western jazz and African traditions. A startling album and one for the year-end lists without a doubt! - Jazz'halo (Belgium). The Shona, InchNgatibatanei,Inch translates to a call for unity and kinship, emphasizing the interconnectedness of people - a very appropriate sentiment guiding the second album by MHONDORO. The melding of traditional Zimbabwean music, American jazz, and an unescapable dose of the Pacific Northwest, InchNgatibataneiInch celebrates the sounds of it's diverse roots with tart melodies sailing amongst inspired grooves, creating surprising moments throughout. MHONDORO is Israeli saxophonist Idit Shner, Zimbabwean vocalist & percussionist John Mambira, and the Oregon-bred rhythm section of pianist Torrey Newhart, bassist Garrett Baxter, and drummer Ken Mastrogiovanni, who discovered their collective sound - both global and hyper-local, truly American in the best sense of the word-during the long days of the pandemic. Meaning Inchthe lion spiritInch in Shona, MHONDORO is full of joy and brimming with the force of life.
