A: I use mine on both a 2014 & a mid 2012 MacBook Pro & it works fine. Those cover both Thunderbolt 1 & Thunderbolt 2. Perhaps you got a faulty cable?

A: Yes it does. I use my surface pro 3 with this cord connected to my tv.
A: I didn't need an adapter to connect from my 2013 MacBook Air to a HP external display ...it worked straight away. It is possible that your Mac is driving your display at a setting higher than it's capable of, so you might want to see if you can start with lower settings and see if that helps.
