Jake Baldwin - Vanishing Point - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Rod Rogers And the Travis Jay Jones Orchestra is actually an alias for multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Rodd Keith, who is the best known figure in the obscure musical sub-genre known as song poem music - a practice by which aspiring lyricists submit their wares, and for a fee the record company would put their lyrics to music. Keith wrote, sang and played a variety of instruments on many of these recordings which have since become highly collectible and quite rare. Presented here is the often described musical genius' quirky, Las Vegas themed album, recorded in the early to mid 1960's using the Chamberlin tape playback sampling keyboard, a forerunner of the modern synthesizer. All selections newly remastered.

Misc. Items, trumpeter Jake Baldwin's second record as a leader, features Adam Harder Nussbaum on drums, Toivo Hannigan on guitar and Cody McKinney on electric bass with seven compositions by Baldwin and three from Hannigan. It showcases Baldwin's ability to mesh the simple and melodic with the exploratory and textural, the juxtaposition of beauty and tension, showing that miscellaneous items can sometimes be used together to create something greater than the sum of it's parts.

The complete album + 2 bonus tracks - limited edition pressing on 180g vinyl - housed in a gatefold sleeve. The formation heard here marks the third incarnation of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt, plus the addition of trombonist Curtis Fuller. 'Jazz Messengers!!!!', originally issued on the Impulse! tag, marked the first time the group was expanded to a sextet, and the last recording made with Timmons, who would later be replaced by Cedar Walton.
