JBL - CLIP4 Portable Bluetooth Speaker - Black

The shape of a clam, emanating sound as pretty as a pearl! This recent open-box purchase of the JBL Clip4 was a very pleasant surprise. The price was incredibly low for what looks and performs like a perfectly functioning new product. Can’t find anything out of the ordinary other than a very securely-resealed package. As a long-time user and owner of a wide variety of JBL professional products, including a more comparable Charge 5 portable, I have to say that what people from the manufacturing industry call a “sound signature” is applied well here. The sound of the Clip4 and the Charge 5 sound pretty similar with the differences being less lower frequencies and volume coming from the Clip4. What makes the Clip4 useful, is its small size and portable proclivity. The speaker built onto the over-sized carabiner is a great idea and allows superior tag-along capability that might include attachments to backpacks, belt loops and bicycles. Whereas the manufacturer touts a water-resistant feature that might include some co-showering, finding plumbing piping that will fit within the gap of the carabiner might prove to be a challenge. Beach and pool-side splashes will be handled like a cool breeze on a hot day. One of the minor frustrations of a clam shell-shape is finding a way to utilize the edge of the product to rest and position the unit to direct sound out of the front to the intended listening position for the best sound balance when not using the carabiner. A small flat edge with a rubberized surface would have been a preferred choice than the harder, sharper unrest-able current surface. All in all, I’m very happy with this product and I’m sure the Clip 5 is even better for a slightly higher retail price. It has the true TWS feature that allows for two units via Bluetooth to portray a stereo image that the Clip 4 does not have. So, factor that into your needs when evaluating which product/price is your best fit. Happy listening on your next adventure!
