Erich Alfred Hartmann (19 April 1922 – 20 September 1993) was a German fighter pilot during World War II and the most successful fighter ace in the history of aerial warfare, flying 1,404 combat missions and engaging in 825 aerial combats. He was credited with shooting down a total of 352 Allied aircraft, including 345 Soviet planes and seven American, and despite being forced to crash-land 16 times due to mechanical failures or damage, he was never shot down from direct enemy action. Hartmann achieved his 352nd and last aerial victory on 8 May 1945, hours before the German surrender, after which he and the remainder of JG 52 surrendered to United States Army forces and were turned over to the Red Army. Later, Hartmann joined the newly established West German Air Force in the Bundeswehr, becoming the first Geschwaderkommodore of Jagdgeschwader 71 "Richthofen" and retired in 1970 due to his opposition to the procurement of the F-104 Starfighter.
