John Zorn - The Concealed - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

I want to jump the blues and make the hard times swing. So opens the fourth full-length album for Bloodshot, and it's a deft proclamation of Wayne the Train's unwavering belief in the curative energy of juke joint swing. Man, there ain't no problem that can't be salved by his brand of stripped down, intensely rhythmic amalgam of hillbilly swing, honky-tonk, rockabilly and hep-cat boogie. It's an infectious and unpretentious sound that tells quotidian tales of driving your life away, throwing your money away, and having holes in your roof and holes in your shoes. Even when he sings on the hard times like Inchthe rich folks call it recession, but the poor folks call it depressionInch in InchWorkin' at Workin'Inch, it's done with a big smile and the dance floor is still full, with Wayne calling out solos to crack players like a modern day Bob Wills. Hell, you can even dance to his murder ballads. Yeah, Wayne's a throwback, but his conviction and energy kick to the curb any notion that he's a dusty old museum piece.

2022 . Incerto is the birth of an exciting new modern jazz ensemble featuring the remarkable trio from Suite for Piano (Brian Marsella, Jorge Roeder, Ches Smith) joined by the brilliant guitarist Julian Lage. A quartet capable of anything, this is the perfect group to realize Zorn's quirky compositional twists and turns. The music is wildly varied-maddeningly complex, powerfully driving, heartbreakingly beautiful-and embraces complex meter changes, atonal melodies, unusual harmonies, and bizarre structural complexity. Inspired by Freud, Sartre, and the Uncertainty Principle, the music explores possibilities, probabilities, inevitabilities, and impossibilities.

In 1993 John Zorn began composing and performing his 208 tunes that now comprise what is known as the Masada songbook. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this, his most popular musical project, John Zorn has organized a series of CD, featuring his most illustrious colleagues performing their own unique arrangements of these classics of modern Jewish music. This first contains three guitarists whose styles are as varies as the compositions they perform. From the singular brilliance of Marc Ribot, the rich sonorities of Bill Frisell, to the Orchestral virtuosity of Tim Sparks, Masada Guitars is a glittering tribute, lovingly executed by three of the most original guitarist in the world.
