About this product

KENNY BALL & HIS JAZZMEN were the most popular, successful band of the late 50s/early 60s UK Trad Boom, and also enjoyed considerable international successes. This compilation anthologises their first ten singles for Pye Records, between 1960-62, alongside a selection of EP and LP sides, and other collectors' rarities. Includes their million-selling, international hits 'Midnight In Moscow' (which reached #2 in the United States), 'March Of The Siamese Children' and 'The Green Leaves Of Summer'. Also features the UK hits 'Samantha', 'I Still Love You All', 'Someday (You'll Be Sorry)', 'So Do I', 'The Pay-Off' and 'Sukiyaaki'. The bonus tracks include a trio of early collectors' rarities, recorded for small labels before they became popular and successful, which are virtually impossible to find elsewhere on CD. This is the first time that Kenny Ball's early recording career has been thus compiled.

Gian Luca Barbero - Music for Guitar - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Giuseppe Rosetta (1901-1985) studied in Rome under Respighi but soon returned to his Piedmontese birthplace of Vercelli. There he remained, leading and enriching the local musical culture as an organist, choir conductor and music teacher. He spurned fame and dedicated himself to his vocation and to God. His beautifully crafted music is accordingly modest in expressive ambition elegant, reflective, at times melancholic, generally characterized by introspective, meditative qualities - nothing brilliant or demonstrative. Very little of it has been recorded, making this new album a valuable contribution to a wider appreciation of postwar Italian music. Rosetta taught composition to Angelo Gilardino, who eventually encouraged him to write guitar music, resulting in the Preludi per GIlardino of 1970. These are beautifully and idiomatically written for the instrument after close consultation with the guitarist. Also from 1970, the Canti della Pianura (Songs of the Plain) is a personal evocation of the countryside of the Po Valley where Rosetta lived and worked. The four movements correspond to times of day the dawn (Mattutino), the afternoon (Meridiana), the evening (Vespertina) and the night (Serenata). The Fantasia dates from 1979, but Rosetta's conservative idiom recalls the language of his teacher Respighi and contemporaries such as Casella and Pizzetti he wrote out of time, vividly evoking a lost era of Romanticism on an instrument that sings naturally of nostalgia and regret. As a student of Gilardino, Gian Luca Barbero has become intimately familiar with the private musical world of Giuseppe Rosetta, and is himself a guitar teacher of renown in Italy. The present marks his debut on Brilliant Classics within the tag's ever-growing library of guitar music.

Stan Kenton - At The Rendezvous Ballroom - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

During his long career as a band-leader, Stan Kenton played often in the most famous and prestigious concert halls across the world. From the Music Center in Los Angeles, to Carnegie Hall in New York; from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, to the Festival Hall in London, he really played them all. Yet, if there was one place Stan considered home, it was a simple ballroom in Balboa Beach, California. This recording is both a quintessential example of Kenton, his band and it's awesome power during this period and of Wally Heider's exceptional engineering talent he would later become famed for. Striking a perfect balance between clarity, warmth, and depth, Heider seamlessly captures here the fine jazz arrangements by Johnny Richards and Bill Holman. Recorded at The Rendezvous Ballroom, Balboa Beach, California in 1958, captured in incredible detail by the legendary Wally Heider and available for the first time on CD.
