About this product
Divine Art is delighted to present the February 2026 of two piano quintets from composer Jim Aitchison, both drawing on his unique dual practice as composer and artist, creating music that responds to encounters with powerful works of art by leading visual artists. The collaboration between music, art, and artistry came together as part of a project with the Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, InchHearing Shadows Wordless LightInch. Both Piano Quintets also grew out of his close collaboration with Peter Sheppard Skærved, Roderick Chadwick, and the Kreutzer Quartet, whose fiercely intelligent commitment and unique experience of working in visual art contexts have underpinned so much of Aitchison's work over the past two decades.Aitchison has always been fascinated with chamber music for piano and strings, inspired by the interplay of texture and timbre, and the huge expressive range of the great masterpieces. His own piano quintets are astonishing and unexpected, recreating yet Inchbusting down the wallsInch of the Germanic canon.Neither of the quintets attempts to convey, InchexplainInch, or illustrate the artworks. InchRather, there is an exploration of territory provoked and revealed in me I am not responding directly to the artworks themselves but rather to the range of my own reactions emerging from experiencing them.InchJim Aitchison studied composition at Nottingham University in the early 1990s. Then in 2000 a move to Cornwall brought a life-changing encounter with the artists of the St Ives School, and a decades-long interest in exploring correspondences between music and art was born.As a composer, he has worked in response to a range of internationally important visual artists including Gerhard Richter, Antony Gormley, Doris Salcedo, Anthony Caro, Peter Randall-Page, Mark Rothko, Richard Serra, Anish Kapoor, Richard Deacon, Terry Frost, Bridget Riley, and John

Grieg wrote roughly 250 bars of a Piano Quintet in his sketchbook before abandoning the work. 120 years after it's being set aside, composer Michael Finnissy's refashioned Grieg quintet received it's definitive performance at the 2013 Bergen International Festival. Finnissy's own Greig-Quintettsatz also graces this disc. The Kreutzer Quartet are dedicatees of hundreds of new works. Pianist Roderick Chadwick broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3 and teaches at the Royal Academy of Music.

Gloria Coates's personal sound world is unlike any other in contemporary music. Her 'Piano Quintet' is rooted in the poetry of fellow American pioneer Emily Dickinson, with half of the quartet tuned a quarter-tone higher than the other, the strange beauty of the music emerging in glacial landscapes and shimmering microtones. Coates's 'Symphony No. 10' evokes the archaeological ruins of a Celtic tribe, inspiring a torrent of dramatic percussion and long held tones that curve and shake in a moving body of sound. Gloria Coates is the most prolific female symphonist in musical history, and Naxos has an emerging series of her symphonic, chamber and other major works. Of her Symphony No. 15, released on a previous Naxos recording, Fanfare wrote Inchthe new symphony is still a jaw-dropper.Inch In general, the symphonies on Naxos come attached to other larger-scaled works and the chamber music (predominantly quartets) is programmed together. This is the first to program a symphony and a chamber work in the same album.

Vol.2 in the Toccata Classics cycle of the complete string quartets of Matthews (b. 1943). The American critic Reilly described the music on Volume One as 'some of the most concentrated, penetrating writing for this medium in the past 30 years or more. It is musical thinking of the highest order and quartet writing in the great tradition of Beethoven, Bartok, Britten, and Tippett'.
