About This Item

This brand new plastic model kit features the M36B1 Gun Motor Carriage (GMC) Tank Destroyer with two scheme options at Level 3 in 1/35 scale, produced by Airfix. The kit comes in vintage-style, officially licensed packaging and contains over 200 detailed parts molded primarily in light brown, unless otherwise indicated. A display stand is not included, and paint and cement are required for assembly. Decals are provided to create two different schemes, with the assembled model measuring approximately 8.38 inches in length and 3.42 inches in width. The M36B1 GMC was an American tank destroyer developed during World War II as a stopgap to meet the need for more powerful anti-tank weaponry. Unlike the standard M36, which mounted its 90mm gun on the M10 chassis, the M36B1 combined the M36 turret with the M4A3 Sherman hull, enabling faster production using the widely manufactured M4A3 chassis. Its 90mm gun was capable of defeating the thick armor of late-war German tanks like the Panther and Tiger. The M36B1 first saw action in late 1944 during Allied campaigns in Western Europe, particularly in France and the Low Countries, and played a critical role in the Battle of the Bulge, where its high-velocity cannon and mobility proved invaluable in both ambushes and head-on engagements. The open-topped turret provided better visibility and faster targeting, though it was vulnerable to shrapnel and small arms fire. Following World War II, the M36B1 continued to serve with U.S. and allied forces, including during the Korean War, where it was effective against North Korean T-34/85 tanks, and some units remained in service into the Cold War. This 1:35 scale model captures the unique combination of the Sherman chassis with the M36 turret, detailing every bolt, weld seam, and rivet with impressive realism, making it an essential piece for collectors and diorama builders highlighting U.S. Army late-war tank destroyer ingenuity.
