Purchased in store for the total lunar eclipse as an emergency alternative of my telescope(my telescope broke the day before the eclipse). Another option is to get the 70-300mm which is quite a “meh.” The FX format of 70-300mm is 600 buck and for 300 more you can get this one: from wide-angle (28mm) to telephoto (300mm), at 300mm (the maximum aperture at this length is 5.6) is sharp enough to capture the moon! Here I upload some photos I took for the eclipse. This is a nice lens to have in your collection and for $300 more you get the quality much better than the plastic 70-300mm. And you won’t risk return it back because of the 15% restocking fee (if I chose the 70-300mm I might end up returning it). It also replaced my 105mm macro lens. Overall, if you are looking for a all-in-one travel lens or you just want one lens to do all the jobs, this is the one you go to. Other than the 70-300mm, this is the cheapest option to get you to 300mm focal length.

After I corrected a slight back-focus issue with this lens on my full-frame Nikon D610, I have been able to take some very nice photos. The combination of this lens with the D610 is quite heavy but very useful for a wide variety of photo opportunities. I have been leaving this lens on my D610 for most shooting. The attached photo was taken with the lens extended to its full zoom length and then cropped very tightly in DXO Optics Pro 10. It was one of a number of photos published on an online news service for which I am a regular contributor.

I am using this lens with a Nikon D850 body and it’s a great lens. I shoot a lot of action photography with fast moving objects and this lens is super fast. While I wish it had a bigger range of zoom like the Nikon 28 to 300 mm lens, this is a faster better quality lens that shoots most shooting situations except close up shots. It’s a pretty decent size lens and has no external moving parts, meaning the lens moves internally inside the case. Definitely recommend this lens.

Excellent addition to any DX or FX format Nikon DSLR camera. Razor sharp images and versatility makes this lense a must for any photo session.

I was looking for a good walk-around lens for vacation. This lens does seem a little sharper than the 70-300mm kit lens. I was also looking at the 18 to 300 but decided to go with this one because of the 5.6 zoomed all the way out. I am happy with the lens.

This lens does many things, which makes it a very handy thing to have. Because it does many things, it includes compromises. I bought it to replace the kit lens, (24-120mm f/4) that came with my D750. I miss the constant f/4 aperture. There seems to be a slight drop in sharpness, born out by ratings on DXO. https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/AF-S-NIKKOR-24-120mm-f-4G-ED-VR-on-Nikon-D750-versus-AF-S-NIKKOR-28-300mm-f-3.5-5.6-ED-VR-on-Nikon-D750__321_975_323_975 On the plus side, it's nice to have the additional reach of 300mm. I don't have to swap lenses to get "closer" to my subject.

Excellent lense for the Nikon D810 or any FX camera. Crisp images right to the edge of the field.

This is a wonderful lens. It provides sharp pictures. The range is really good. It works well for landscape, wildlife, as well as macros. It does well for portraits, people. The VR works well. It's really fast. I love that I do not have to switch out my lenses so often with the range of this lens. The lens is well made and easy to use.

I purchased a Nikon D750 with this Nikkor 28-300 mm 3.5-5.6 lens. If you don't have a lot of extra cash to shell out for multiple lenses this is lens is a good option. You can capture great wide angle images at 28mm and zoom in on birds and other wildlife at 300mm and still get great images. For walking around I like this lens for its focal length flexibility.

I have been a professional photographer for over 40 years. I purchased this lens to go with my D750 for event photography. It is an outstanding lens throughout all focal lengths. I have just left it on my D750. This lens gives you the capability to photograph semi wide to long telephoto. It has made my job so much easier and more efficient with out loosing any quality. This is an awesome lens. I now use my 24 to 120 as a backup.

Lens is very efficient for someone who wants to travel light- excellent compromise on quality and having a light weight, versatile lens.

The Nikon 28-300 mm AVR lens eliminates the need to carry several lenses with different focal lenghts. Having one lens with variable focal lenghts also eliminates the possibility of camera sensor dust exposure due to frequent lens swapping. This lens have great focal range for close-ups and good range even for wildlife photographs. The variable reduction is also a good feature of this lens as it reduces camera shake when taking fast action situations.

This lens is a wide angle and telephoto all in one. I love not carrying 3 to 4 different lens. It is heavy than the regular lens, but you won't miss a shot. I can be talking a picture of my family on the beach and when a bird flies over my head I just zoom to 300mm from 28mm and I got the shot! I would of missed it if I say with a fixed 50mm and tried to change it to a fixed 300mm.

I read the reviews on this lens before buying so I wasn't expecting much. I have been pleasantly surprised with its sharpness and versatility. This lens is sharper than my Nikkor 70-300 VR ED lens with very good low light performance. It is a bit heavy and requires frequent sensor cleanings due to dust blowback but its versatility and sharpness more than compensate. I'm glad I bought it!

It is amazing to have a lens with optical zoom ratio larger than 10 and still provide relatively sharp images in the full range. Based on my tests, the quality of images in the full range, from 28 mm to 300 mm, is comparable or better than the ones from my old Nikon lens with optical zoom of 3x. This lens can replace my three old lens, covering similar focal length. The only down side is a little on heavy side and the side is a little bigger to carry around. But, the convince will well compensate those disadvantages.

Lens is a little heavy, but zoom range is great! Considering that it takes the place of two lenses, the weight is not a factor for me. I purchased this before taking a trip to the U.K., and used it with the Nikon D600 body. I took just over 1000 photos and was very pleased with the results.

This is by far the flagship of the Nikon line. It is perhaps the new normal lens to leave on my camera at all times. Sharp and steady as she goes comes to mind. I am very pleased.

I use this lens with my Nikon D600 and it does a great job. I like the fact it has VR settings for normal and active. From my experience with another brand (Tamron) of this lens 28-300mm, this one outperforms the Tamron when viewing the photos. Photos never look overexposed especially from a bright sun lit day. This is a good quality lens and I would recommend it.

Bought this lens and a Nikon 20mm to pair off with my purchase of my D780 and keep my camera bag smaller and easier to take everywhere all the time as I do .. I will say I couldn’t be happier with the 28-300 it is a great all purpose lens , that delivers great images that are usable for multiple applications from paying work to personal images or in my case fine art photography .. you will read some reviewers talk about soft corner or vignetting.. 2 things here whatever of that that there may be which I haven’t seen any that would hurt the image . That is a concern to only soulless picture making photo nerds concerned with the creation of gutless pictures ,those aren’t photographs but pretty pictures .. anyone staring into the corners of your images is missing the point of what photography is about .. Now facts about this lens are it is bigger when extended to 300 and a bit heavier , but not much heavier then the kit lens but it is fact . it’s not weather sealed , but if you go out in the rain/snow with it carry a gallon zip lock bag , big rubber bands and cut a hole in it and you will be fine .. and on the wide side at 28 it’s plenty wide again the difference between the 24 of the kit lens and 28 on this is no big deal .. I do recommend getting a circular polarizer the ring size is a 77 mm so you can get a good one for about 100$ .. Bottom line highly recommend this lens for all real photographers that want to make images that give you something meaty to work with
