For those who are one, being a caregiver can be a LOT of work, time, effort and responsibility. Within the last few years my wife and I had to step into that role and begin to take care of my elderly mother who initially did not reside with us. This included having to go out of our way to check up on her several times a week, take her trash out, check her mail, clean up her house to name a few tasks. The most important job was her well-being and safety especially considering having been injured from falls and unable to get up or get to a phone for help. Over the past few months we have explored several options for remote monitoring including life alert systems which, in some cases, require a pretty hefty additional monthly cost. That’s when we came across the new Nomo Smart Care essential care kit which includes a hub for the care giver along with two plug in sensors and four wireless stick-on sensors with panic buttons you can place throughout the house. First, let me start off with the installation. Unboxing and setting up the essential care kit was very easy and after downloading the smart phone application and setting up my account, Nomo provided simply video instructions for every step of the process. After plugging the hub in, a voice tell you what steps to do next through the smart phone app which included a recent update. I will say that the update did initially freeze during the process but I was able to unplug it and plug it back in and it worked just fine. While placing the plug-in and stick-on sensors and panic buttons in areas that are not blocked to sense motion and easily accessible if someone were to fall on the ground, I also experienced some connectivity issues however, with some patience, was eventually able to get them to sync to the hub and my smart phone app. I even placed one of the stick-on sensor/buttons on the provided lanyard which can be placed anywhere or hung around someone’s neck for easy access. The whole process took approximately 30 minutes and would have been less if it weren’t for the technical issues I had which I can’t pin on the device(s), my smartphone or the app. Monitoring my mom’s house using the app was very convenient and provided me real time motion detection notifications to ensure she was up and about. I gave the panic buttons a few test pushes which notified me via the smartphone app and also via the voice on the hub. Once the panic button is activated, you are able to escalate the alert to one of Nomo’s live agents who can alert for help if need be. There are plenty of features within the app itself as well including temperature and humidity monitoring, outage and service logs, setting mobility, sleep, diet and bathroom goals and viewing an entire days’ activities to ensure someone doesn’t need assistance. I specifically placed one of the sensors in the restroom where some people could fall and one on the refrigerator door to tell whether someone is getting food. One thing I like is that it doesn’t require any cameras for monitoring to ensure someone isn’t violating someone’s privacy, only their movement and whether they need assistance. The other thing I like about the Nomo Smart Care kit is it only costs $10 a month for the monitoring so it doesn’t break the bank in monthly fees and is, in my opinion, well worth the cost. Overall, I believe this is a great investment for anyone who is a caregiver and may not be able to be with or check on someone throughout the busy days.

There are a variety of care/surveillance systems, many of them include cameras and although for many it is a feature they are looking for, there are others who consider that perhaps with other types of devices without using cameras can do the job. Nomo smart care belongs to that type of device, it has very useful features to keep monitored the person being cared for, it is also easy to install. The box includes 1 hub, 2 Satellites, 4 Tags, 1 Power Cord, 1 Lanyard. Installation is easy as the app tells you how to do it and what steps to follow to complete it successfully. Although in my opinion a kind of initial configuration for the kit that is purchased would not be bad, that is to say that step by step tells you what elements of the kit to install first and what later, and go completing a kind of levels / installation scenarios to complete it with some kind of test of the device and confirm that everything works well. While the app allows you to install each of the elements of the kit, you have to choose what you want to install first. This becomes a bit tedious because, at least in my experience, the app crashes sometimes or by modifying some settings, you have to close and reopen the app to continue. After everything was completely and correctly installed it is possible to start monitoring the tags and satellites, the app notifies you if any of the devices detects movement, although the option of motion notification of each sensor is not recommended if the place where the system is installed will have constant movement. In the tags if the emergency button is pressed an alert is sent and must be responded to determine what action will be the next, either request assistance or confirm that the situation has been resolved, also the tags have fall detection and work quite well. The satellites that are connected to the outlets also respond quickly by sending notifications if they detect movement. It is up to each user which configuration to choose for the notifications, in the end it will depend on the needs of each user. The device fulfills its purpose very well and I consider that there are two key parts, one is the app that allows multiple changes in the configuration of the network, security, device, notifications etc. and the other is the subscription, since the product offers 24/7 service it is necessary to pay a subscription which is understandable, fortunately it is relatively affordable $9.99 at the time im writing this review. In summary, this device has very interesting and important features, as it can be of great help to be aware and monitor a person or persons who need more specific care, the fact that it has a lanyard that allows you to hang a tag is great, that helps prevent someone from getting lost or worse. The device allows you to create certain routines, reminders and set goals in relation to health care, which I think is excellent. Without a doubt for those who take care of other people and need to be much more aware of them, I can highly recommend this product, it is a great ally in this matter.

When I first saw this home-care system, I was immediately interested. Over this past year, my senior age mother-in-law has experienced several health issues, and undergone surgeries. We want her to be able to live as independently as possible, for as long as possible, and this Nomo Smart Care System should allow that to be a true reality for her. Unboxing and setup was a relatively straightforward procedure. Of course, a monthly cost for the monitoring service is required, but the expense is more than worth it for the piece-of-mind this home-care system provides. While the cost might perhaps be prohibitive for some seniors on a budget or with limited income, this was 'doable' for my mom-in-law. Otherwise, the option is there for that cost to be paid by the caregiver family, if need be. After installing the Nomo Smart Care App on each of our mobile phones, following the instructions to setup all the devices around her home, and spending some time customizing the app settings to our specifications, the system pretty much does the rest. Optimal positioning of each motion and sound sensor was key, and required a bit of 'trial and error', but we wanted to be certain all was "good to go." Several features really fit our, and her, needs. Automatic 'real-time' alerts and updates, having those handy alert buttons on each device (placed specifically within reach just "in case"), and there being 24/7 911 dispatch ready should an emergency event happen. Of course, maintaining our loved one's privacy and making sure her personal data is secure, was of utmost importance to us, as well. That said, we're reasonably confident of this even after just a short time using this home-care system. My mother-in-law seems quite pleased, so far. The Nomo Smart Care System affords us a level of assurance and support during the time we are not able to be there in-person. It is our opinion that this full-time "electronic caregiver" monitoring system helps provide our loved one with an overall better quality of life.

The Nomo Smart Care Kit for Caregivers isn't just for caregivers. It's for anyone that cares about people you want to monitor. I tested this with my 82 year old grandparents and set it up in their home. They're very resistant to technology, but the nice thing about this is that once it's setup, it's like it's not even there. To be honest there are other devices/systems that do similar things, but Nomo gets it right. They cater to older people that may need monitoring, but it doesn't have to be used in that way necessarily. The kit comes with the main device hub, 2 satellites (the square cubes), 4 tags (the circles), and very clear instructions. Once you download the app from the app store (make sure you search for Nomo Smart Care), you're pretty much golden. The app is really done well and is straightforward to follow instructions. I also like how the Nomo talks to you to give some initial instructions such as to download the app, and also when you're connecting a satellite or tag and when they successfully connect. The instructions in the app are very thorough. As long as you have the patience to go through each step, setup is truly a breeze. Activating the 90 day free trial is great as well. I've used many 'home security' type of systems, and although this is meant for monitoring, it can be used similarly and it works well. I put the hub in a heavily occupied area, satellite same thing, and the tags on commonly opened things like the refrigerator door and some other doors. If you're on the fence, I feel this is worth giving a shot. I can't think of any way to improve the device from my initial experience. It may seem daunting at first, but truly, just download the app and you'll be on your way quick.

A few months ago, my mom had a fall at home and couldn’t get up immediately afterwards. She ended up lying on the floor for a few hours until I happened to call in the morning and couldn’t reach her. We decided to look for a technology solution so Mom feels more secure if something were to happen again. Nomo’s monitor does exactly what we were looking for in a helpful, yet unobtrusive way. After plugging in the system at Mom’s apartment, we installed an app on her phone. She then invited my brother and I to become part of her “care team.” This system was similar to where my aunt lives and the building requests residents check in by a certain time each day to allay concerns. Configuring the hub, satellites, and sensors was also straightforward. The hub is connected via wifi, so can go anywhere there’s a good signal. The satellites are plugged in, then activated in the app to pair with the hub. Once installed, they all work together to give a picture of daily life. There are suggested routines which the app helps configure. My mom and I worked together to talk through what she was comfortable having monitored. We chose not to use any of the sensors in the bathroom, as that seemed a little intrusive. However, Mom does have a sensor she wears around her neck to use as a panic button. It will also sense if/when she falls again and send an alert. We set up a satellite in the bedroom to monitor if she’s in bed longer than usual in the morning or other changes in her routing. The hub is near the kitchen will help flag if she doesn’t make it in there before 10 a.m. There were other alerts the app suggested such as placing a sensor on her apartment door, so we’ll know when she heads out for the day. It’s supposedly so we don’t worry if no other movement is detected for a while. We may add that at a later point, but we all wanted to keep it simple at first. We also don’t want our mom thinking that we’re spying on her. There’s a panic button included in the starter kit, as well, so that she can reach out if anything were to happen. We tried it out to see what would happen. The kit comes with a lanyard which the button fits onto. Pressing and holding the button causes the base to start connecting to the care team. We tried it as a test, in case mom falls again. Since I’d enabled phone calls in the app, I got a call from the hub and was connected to hear what was going on in the room. It’s a little confusing to have to enable that during set up as the app doesn’t say what it uses that permission for. My brother had only enabled notifications, so the app pinged him that our mom was connecting via the hub, asking if he wanted to connect. Now that we know how it works, we’ll be prepared if it ever needs to be used. If the panic button falls abruptly, the system can also be set to call us and/or mom. Nomo has a call center staff who will reach out if there’s no resolution via the app, saying that all is OK. The kit comes with 4 buttons in total which can be used to track movement or serve as a panic button. We decided to place one near the floor on the shower door so that if mom falls in the shower, she’ll have access to it. Having the Nomo system in place is not going to stop me from worrying about my mom living alone. The subscription cost is very nominal for the monitoring which they provide, including the live assistance. It allows us all to have some of the benefits of an independent living facility, without the high fees. I expect I’ll continue to hear from mom daily, but Nomo let’s me schedule those calls a little better around my schedule instead of adding one more thing to my morning routine of getting the kids to school and ready for work. I sleep a little better, however, knowing that she’s OK every day.
