A: Yes, I bought the Shield to use as both a PLEX server and client. It took a little time for me to discover that unlike a PC I couldn’t just attach an External HDD to one of the Shield’s USB ports and instantly setup the PLEX server. I had to first format the HDD to Wipe the drive completely and merge the HDD with the Shield’s internal storage. The issue here is that once formatted on the Shield the External HDD will only work on the Shield (unless re-formatted for PC). This meant that I couldn’t remove the HDD from the shield, connect it to a PC and add media. That left me with an empty 4TB HDD while all of my media was still on my PC’s HDD. After lots of Googling/YouTubing I discovered that I’d have to first mount my PC as Network Storage to the Shield and then transfer my Media across the Network directly to the Shield. It works great now but it definitely took some time to figure out the process. There is a lot of conflicting information on the internet and especially YouTube. Hopefully this helps you avoid the same pitfalls I encountered.

The Nvidia Shield TV Pro is a premium streaming and entertainment device that still holds up among top competitors. Despite its age of release, it still receives updates, can run almost any app that others fail to even install, and is customizable on a level that few other devices can match. I previously owned the non-pro version and the additional features such as AI upscaling and Dolby Vision/Atmos make this a great purchase. Beyond streaming, it allows a user to also experience some light gaming and supports cloud streaming for PC titles via GeForce, Steam, Local PC Streaming (GameStream/Sunshine) and uses apps like RetroArch to emulate classic consoles (N64, PSP, arcade) in addition to titles available through Google Play. For connectivity, the Shield has one full sized HDMI that supports Dolby protocols, comes with 16GB of internal storage and will allow external hard drives and USB drives to connect using two 3.0 USB ports and even has a LAN port for hardwire internet connectivity - something very few other devices have! 3GB of RAM allow the Shield to run apps and services with hardly any lag and plenty of power. It also has Bluetooth protocols for syncing of other devices such as earbuds and controllers and there is a dedicated Nvidia app for smart device use. There is a Shield TV gaming controller similar to XBox and Playstation that can be purchased separately unless you find a bundle deal on eBay or other marketplaces. The remote is backlit for ease of use and even has a remote finder feature! You can download an app like Button Mapper to reprogram the dedicated buttons on the remote (Netflix) that can be used to avoid accidental launches. The Shield may seem dated and pricey but for the money, it is one of the BEST devices you could have for your entertainment ecosystem.

Here’s a review for the NVIDIA Shield: The NVIDIA Shield is a powerful streaming device that excels in performance and versatility. Equipped with the Tegra X1+ processor, it delivers smooth 4K HDR streaming and Dolby Vision support, making movies and TV shows look stunning. It also supports Dolby Atmos for immersive audio, which is great for home theater setups. One of the standout features is its support for GeForce NOW, allowing users to stream PC-quality games. Combined with its AI-enhanced upscaling, even older or lower-resolution content looks sharper on modern 4K TVs. The Google Assistant integration and smart home compatibility make it more than just a streaming box—it can function as a hub for voice commands and automation. The design is compact and sleek, and the remote is improved with backlit buttons and voice search, though some users may find the button layout takes getting used to. The Shield's biggest downside is its higher price compared to other streaming devices, but its premium performance and gaming capabilities justify the cost for power users and enthusiasts. Overall, the NVIDIA Shield is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a high-end streaming experience with gaming potential. Rating: 4.5/5.
