About this product
Most of the tunes on Keep Away the Dead were born at Mara Hall in Mara, BC (pop. 350) where bed tracks were laid down in the crisp air during the depth of winter. The arctic atmosphere of that empty, cavernous, hardwood structure was the perfect complement to Huebert's sensibility A tense and acute restraint; a shivering, biting, sometimes bitter rending of barebones, folk-inflected rock music. With the addition of Shaunn Watt and Peter Carruthers, Siskiyou has coalesced into a superb, incisive four-piece band, honed over the past year by extensive touring in Europe and Canada.

The eponymous debut for the new group led by former Great Lake Swimmers member Colin Huebert in collaboration with Erik Arnesen (who still plays with the Swimmers) and musician / filmmaker Karolyn Keir. Banjo, piano, accordion and electric guitar play the lead roles here. The resulting collection of songs thrums with a scrupulous lo-fi backwoods energy and restraint that perfectly conjures the the rich, crisp yet often chilly landscape of the band's Pacific Northwest environs.

Myroslav Skoryk, a postgraduate student of Dmitry Kabalevsky, is one of Ukraine's leading composers and teachers. His works range from opera and ballet, a symphonic transcription of Paganini's 24 Caprices, and his cycle of nine Violin Concertos written over a 45-year span. They draw on elements of Carpathian folklore and are saturated in expressive dialogues, lyricism and elegy while also exuding powerful intensity. Skoryk's sensual writing is frequently contrasted with syncopated motifs, cadenzas, fugal episodes and march rhythms. This is the first of two volumes.
