  • General
    • Brand: Sony
    • Model Number: DSCRX100M4/B
    • Product Name: Cyber-shot RX100 IV 20.1-Megapixel Digital Camera
    • Color: Black
    • Digital Camera Type: DSLR Camera with Lens
  • Imaging
    • Image Sensor Type: CMOS (CCD and CMOS are the two main technologies used in image sensors. CCD, the older of the two types, turns analog light signals into digital pixels. This conversion happens without distortion, resulting in high-quality images. Newer CMOS sensors use transistors at each pixel to move electrical charges. CMOS sensors are typically less expensive, but also require more light to create distortion-free images.)
    • Image Sensor Size: APS-C (22.2 x 14.8 mm)
    • Total Pixels: 21 megapixels (Generally, the more pixels, the higher the image resolution and the finer the detail that can be seen.)
    • Image Resolution (Display): 5472 x 3648 (Refers to the number of pixels, both horizontally and vertically, used to either capture an image or display it. The higher the resolution the finer the image details.)
    • Digital Zoom: 11x (A digital zoom is accomplished electronically, with no adjustment of the camera's optics, and no optical resolution gained in the process. The existing data is not enhanced or added to, merely displayed at a lower resolution, thereby giving an illusion of an enlarged image.)
    • Low Light/High Sensitivity: true (High sensitivity digital imaging devices are designed to work in low light conditions to produce a high dynamic range image.)
    • Image File Format(s): JPEG, RAW (Standardized software format(s) of storing digital images. The type of format chosen for capturing and compressing the image can determine quality, level of detail, and storage space required.)
  • Focus
    • Autofocus: true (Allows the camera to automatically focus through the lens, rather than by adjusting the lens manually.)
    • Eye Autofocus (Eye AF): true (Automatically seeks out and focuses on the subject's eye and holds it as the camera and subject move and as the photographer shoots at high frame rates.)
  • Exposure Control
    • Shutter Speeds: iAuto: 4 - 1/2000 sec., program auto: 30 - 1/2000 sec., manual: bulb, 30 - 1/2000 sec., aperture priority: 30 - 1/2000 sec., shutter priority: 30 - 1/2000 sec. (The length of time the shutter remains open when the shutter release is activated, expressed in fractions of seconds. The longer the shutter is open, the more light that is able to be captured by the camera sensor.)
    • Minimum Aperture: f/1.8 (The smallest opening of a lens, typically expressed in f-numbers. The larger the number, the smaller the aperture and the less light that can enter the lens. A smaller aperture creates a larger depth of field, which keeps both foreground and background in focus.)
    • Maximum Aperture: f/1.8 (The limit to how wide a lens can be open, typically expressed in f-numbers. The smaller the number, the larger the aperture and the more light that can enter the lens. A larger aperture creates a shallower depth of field, helpful for keeping subjects in focus and blurring background details.)
    • Brightness Control: true (Allows the camera to adjust the brightness of a captured image for optimal exposure.)
    • Burst Mode: true (Also referred to as continuous shooting. This feature captures multiple shots in rapid succession.)
    • Self Timer: true
    • Shooting Modes: AUTO (Intelligent Auto/Superior Auto), program auto, aperture priority, shutter-speed priority, manual exposure, MR (memory recall) and more (Exposure modes employed by the photographer to control the optimal aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and other settings for capturing specific subjects/scenes. Examples include Aperture-Priority, Macro, and Manual modes.)
    • Panorama Mode: true
    • Scene Modes: Portrait, sports action, macro, landscape and more (Exposure modes with predetermined optimal settings for capturing specific scenes. Examples include Landcape, Portrait, and Sports modes.)
    • White Balance Modes: Auto, daylight, shade, cloudy, incandescent, fluorescent, flash, color temperature, filter, custom (Settings that calibrates how the color white is rendered in an image/video, reducing the appearance of unnatural contrasts caused by various light sources.)
    • Effective Pixels: 20.1 megapixels (The actual number of pixels which make up the viewable image.)
  • Lens
    • Lens Type: Standard Zoom
    • Minimum Focal Length: 8.8 millimeters (The minimum distance between the lens and the image sensor that allows the subject to be in focus. The shorter the focal length, the greater the area of scene captured.)
    • Maximum Focal Length: 73.3 millimeters (The maximum distance between the lens and the image sensor that allows the subject to be in focus. The greater the focal length, the smaller the area of scene captured.)
    • Lens Series: Sony E (The product group that the lens belongs to, based on similar shared features.)
    • Lens Model Number: Built-in
  • Flash
    • Flash Modes: Automatic, Off, Slow sync (The flash feature emits light to increase the brightness of a subject in dimly lit environments. Common modes include Auto and Red-Eye Reduction.)

    • Screen Size: 3 inches (Size of the screen, measured diagonally from corner to corner.)
    • Screen Resolution: 1,228,800 dots (Screens come in a range of resolutions (measured in pixels, horizontal x vertical). The higher the resolution, the greater the picture quality.)
    • Viewfinder Type: Electronic (A viewfinder is the part of a camera (or attachment) that allows you to see and focus a scene in frame. Optical viewfinders let you view the scene directly through the lens. Electronic viewfinders display the image on a screen in its approximate final form.)
    • Touch Screen: false (Touch-screen devices make navigating more intuitive. Using a touch-screen display, you can do things such as tap to select, hold and drag to move items, swipe to scroll, and pinch to zoom.)

Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT WEIGH IN OUNCES?

A: Hi Glenie, the wight of the camera in ounce is 271 g (1.62 oz) (Body only), 298 g (With battery and media). Hope this helps. Regards, Zander

Q: How good of zoom does this have? I bought a Sony camera about two years ago and the zoom was nearly non-existent! Don't wanna spend another penny for a camera with a bad zoom lens.

A: The zoom is not very strong. It is comparable to 24mm - 70mm. If you want a similar camera with an extraordinary zoom, take a look at the Sony HX 90 V. My wife has this camera and it has an incredible zoom plus GPS tracking.

Q: Hello, does the camera shoot well in low light? What are its ISO specs?

A: 12800 is the high end for iso. Never used that high of an iso but it will take very good shots in most minimal light situations.

Q: How do you overcome the constant overheating when recording video with the RX100M4 in 4k or standard HD? How many priceless moments have you missed due to your camera overheating and forcing a shutdown?

A: Hi Cameron, The camera or battery is heated to some extent during operation because the power consumed by the camera is partly converted to heat. Normally, this is not an indication of a malfunction. If necessary, turn the camera off and allow time for it to cool down. -Anthony

Q: How well does it hold up to rain, sand, basic vacation type conditions?

A: I use mine for all my travel pictures with great results, but it is not waterproof! So use care in inclement weather.

Q: Can it take pictures while using video?

A: Hi Jenn, yes, you can take still images while recording a video with this camera. Thanks_Mitch
