Sony’s G Master lens technology delivers extraordinary resolution and bokeh in a compact, lightweight 50mm lens. With outstanding image-wide resolution and contrast from F1.4, this fast, responsive lens offers sharp realism for stills and movies that will satisfy users from advanced amateurs to the most discerning professionals.

  • Breathtaking G Master image quality right out to the edges of the frame: Two high-precision XA lens elements effectively correct distortion and aberration. This new optical design also employs an ED glass element to suppress chromatic aberration.
  • Innovative optics and a large F1.4 aperture deliver magnificent bokeh: Innovative optics and a large F1.4 maximum aperture combine to deliver magnificent bokeh. Smooth, naturally defocused background and foreground bokeh are ideal for making portrait subjects stand out from their surroundings.
  • Highly mobile, lightweight and compact lens with incredible performance: Precisely positioned XA elements, high-thrust XD linear motors and the latest compact aperture unit create large-aperture high-resolution lens that is only 3.17” in diameter and 3.78” in length, weighing just 18.23 oz.
  • Fast, precise, quiet AF and tracking for stills and movies: The focus system is driven by high-thrust XD linear motors and an advanced control algorithm for smooth, responsive focus drive. Movie subjects are smoothly captured and tracked even when shooting at 120 fps or other high frame rates.
  • Circular aperture with 11-blade iris for naturally rendered bokeh: The deep, soft bokeh available with full-frame image sensors is further enhanced by a 11-blade circular aperture and optimally controlled spherical aberration. All of this supports the creation of impressive, memorable imagery.
  • Excellent close-up performance and magnification for eye-opening detail: Minimum focusing distance is 16.1” (41 cm) and maximum magnification is 0.16x when AF is used and 15” (38 cm and 0.18x) for MF, providing extra flexibility for shooting stills and movies.
  • ED glass element minimizes chromatic aberration for precisely rendered edge detail: An ED glass element significantly reducing flare and ghosting by taking axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration out of the picture.
  • Circular aperture with 9-blade iris for naturally rendered bokeh: The deep, soft bokeh available with full-frame image sensors is further enhanced by a 9-blade circular aperture and optimally tuned spherical aberration. All of this supports the creation of impressive, memorable imagery.
  • Nano AR Coating II for outstanding clarity and minimized flare and ghosting: Nano AR Coating II process produces a thin, uniform coating on lens surfaces, dramatically reducing internal reflections that can cause flare and ghosting.
  • Dedicated aperture ring, click/de-click and iris lock switches: An aperture ring provides direct, rapid control. The aperture ring click stops can be turned ON to provide tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for smooth, silent control when shooting movies.
  • Natural, linear manual focus response: Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, control feels immediate and precise enough for rack focus effects when shooting movies.
  • Fluorine front element coating: The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface.
  • Dust and moisture resistant design* for reliability in challenging conditions: An updated dust and moisture resistant design* provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions.

    Amazing Lens!

This lens I did a lot of research on before I purchased and I compared this to the sigma and the Sony 1.2 50 mm G master. Most of the consensus was it's a no-brainer with purchasing this lens, it is incredibly fast, great with autofocusing and that iris lock button is great to have. Also very and I mean very sharp. Also lightweight and compact compared to other lenses which makes it more of a joy to carry it around and shoot more often instead of always carrying heavy equipment. I am definitely having fun with this lens and if you're in the market for a gmaster I definitely say go this route. You will not be disappointed.

Light weight, Crisp, Fast, and great Bokeh

This is an amazing lens, possibly the best 50mm lens for the Sony systems, If you are worried about keeping your setup lightweight, with the highest image quality possible and fastest autofocus, this is the lens to get. The jump in price for the 1.2 GM lens does not seem worth the money for how little difference in perfomance you actually get. If you've had the less expensive 50mm 1.8 lens from Sony and feel you are ready to upgrade to the next step, I would definitely pick this up over the 1.2

    Great Lens

I was conflicted between the 50mm f/1.2 GM and this 50mm f/1.4 GM. I read so many written reviews and watched so many video that had pitted the two GM lenses against each other as well as reviews that focused solely on each lens and it came down to one important factor: weight. Of course focusing speed is quicker on the f/1.2GM - it has four XD linear motors, but it also needs them to move all that glass which contributes to its overall weight. The form factor of the f/1.4 GM is really nice considering I also own the 35mm f/1.4 GM lens; a really great compliment to each other. Image quality is amazing both wide open and stopped down. The money saved is going towards either Sony's 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II or Sigma's version of it. (Not exactly lightweight lenses, but everyone should own a lens like that.) I've owned this lens for about a month now and am thoroughly impressed with its performance. It is definitely a great lens for the price!
