A: No...but if you have a small child in your home, they probably can. And, yes you can make it have no lighting.
A: not necessarily so. i use tap water. it's hard. i've used distilled. i get the white powder residue both types of water. try a humidifier water descaller. follow instructions accurately should take care of situation for you. it's done good for me. d
