Video quality is great, coming from the previous qm7 2024 model however I do think the motion handling might be slightly worse, with some red shift in fast moving video. Much brighter and the increase in dimming zones does make hdr content pop better. Sound quality is also a slight downgrade, but honestly you should be using a sound system anyway if you’re spending this much on a tv.

The TCL 75QM7L lives up to TCL’s reputation of great value and great technology. Setup was rather straightforward. The TV this set replaced was mounted on the wall, and I was able to use the existing mount because it was compatible with the 300 X 300 VESA requirement for this TV. (Always check the VESA compatibility between the TV and a mount to avoid surprises.) I had the TV up on the wall in about 30 minutes. Powering on the TV for the first time greeted me with the Google TV setup screen. If you have other Google TVs, it will recognize your Google account settings, including WiFi settings and apps already installed on your other TVs. A check for software updates added about 15 minutes to the total setup time, but it was quite straightforward. A really nice surprise and delight is the backlit remote. What a great touch for this price point. The remote is typical for that of a Google TV—basic functions, easy to understand, with nice haptic feedback on the buttons. Honestly, the picture calibration out of the box was extraordinarily bright and way too saturated. I have found that rtings.com does a really nice job determining the best picture settings for most TVs, and I have set all the TVs in my house to their recommended settings—which are customized for each TV brand and model. Their recipes result in a very nice picture with super color accuracy, awesome contrast, and perfect color saturation. Rtings.com once again provided great settings for this TV—and the picture looks nothing short of stunning. One of the first selections played on this set was Avengers: Endgame on BluRay – Holy Cow did it look and sound great! While I generally do not like the motion clarity feature (it makes everything look too cartoon-like), there were certain shows where motion clarity on Low does elimnate the stutter in extremely detail-heavy, fast action scenes without making other scenes have fake, cartoonish motion. For action movies, I set it to Low, for everything else, it's off. The speakers for the TV are on the rear, so placing the TV near or against a wall will provide the best sound experience. With my unit hung on the wall, sound from the TV was impressive. The audio was crisp, with decent bass and balanced treble / midrange. Speech was clear and balanced with other program audio. Our household watches a number of news programs and reality shows, so good speech audio is important to us. There are different sound settings for the TV—the only one I did not care for was the movie setting, as it was too echoey. I did not find the need for any type of amplifier or sound bar—but again, this is my everyday TV that is not dedicated for movies or gaming. I appreciated that volume levels between inputs was consistent—unlike other brands where you switch from one input to another and you get blasted out of the room or think there is no volume at all. I realize that many people don’t use antenna TV anymore—and I rarely do—but I appreciate that the TV has a coax input for a digital antenna. The TV located the expected digital stations in my area and provided a nice guide and program information experience. Nicely done. The TV has a host of other inputs—4 HDMI (including an eARC/ARC), two USB-A, an optical audio out, and an ethernet in. The TV supports Bluetooth audio connections, as well. All of these ports are on the right side of the TV—with the power being on the left side. The ports are tucked in a little bit, allowing for easy access and ample cable tucking. One of the built-in apps on TCL TVs is TCL TV+. It is buried a bit in the app list, but it is worth checking out. While certainly not a cable or streaming replacement, the programming is free and hosts quite a collection of stations, movies and TV shows. Glancing through the channels, I found a Star Trek Channel, an Alfred Hitchcock Channel, Local News, Weather, Westerns, Horror, Comedy—there were a lot of choices. I would advise you check it out. My household now owns three TCL TVs. Two of them, we purchased in the last year, to replace aging sets. It seems like in the last few years, TV apps have gotten a bit more bulky and resource intensive. Even resetting these older TVs, they are slow to respond and getting around the home screen is aggravating with a lot of lag. The newer TCL TVs have excellent response and no noticeable lag. Overall, I have been extraordinarily impressed with the TCL TVs—especially the two newest ones--which incluses this set. The difference in the picture and sound from sets just a few years older is nothing short of amazing. Between the MiniLED technology, full array dimming, higher refresh rates and Dolby sound—if you’re on the fence for a new TV, the best advice I can give is to go to the store and see these sets in person. While everyone has different viewing and audio preferences, TCL provides much of the technology the big brands do, but at a better price point.

If all you care about in a TV is visual and audio quality, this is a 5/5 TV. The biggest drawback is the Google AI assistant which can be activated with “Hey Google” or by toggling the voice input option on the remote. If you say something like Hey Google, turn on the tv”, that works great and it knows what you want. If you say something like, “Can I watch Psych on Peacock”, instead of opening Psych in Peacock, it will pull up an informational screen about Psych and share that it found information about it being available in Peacock. Directly saying, “open Psych in Peacock” works some of the time, but I find myself still having to get the remote to navigate, which to me misses the entire point of having a smart voice assistant built into the tv. I do like being able to say, “Hey Google, Turn off the tv”, when I’m done for the night, or if my wife fell asleep with the controller on her side of the bed. I also appreciate that the tv supports Airplay. The biggest wow for the tv, is actually the audio. It has 2 reverberating speakers in the back of the tv that pretty effectively replace the need for a single soundbar. Granted, I’d still probably prefe a full surround sound setup if this was in my living room or gaming room, but as a bedroom tv, eliminating the need for a separate soundbar has been awesome. Picture quality is rock solid, however I did have to fine tune some settings when I first set it up. It would have been nice if picture quality was part of the initial setup, because my wife’s reaction was, “doesn’t this look washed out?” And she was right. Changing to the cinema setting fixed the color balance issues but it was a pretty disappointing experience from the start, and frankly a huge miss considering this might be setup in someone’s home that doesn’t use technology enough to go into menu settings to refine the video. I’m not sure if it’s even fair to take a full star off for the Voice Assistant but it turned an exciting initial experience into a disappointment. It deserves at least a half star off. Overall though, the tv is great, and comes with some pretty cool apps available for install, including a free Google live tv app, which mostly plays channels with older shows and sometimes replaces commercials with a pretty scenic video while you wait for the commercial timer to expire. Overall I’m very happy with this tv and would recommend.
