    Checks all the boxes

The TCL 75” QM8L Google 4K TV arrived well packaged in the box. Unpacking was pretty standard for a large TV. Remove the outside plastic packing and the straps. Open the top of the box and remove the packaging. Lift the box over the TV. You now have access to the TV. I will be using the TV stand instead of mounting the TV on a wall. So I removed the TV stand and associated hardware. The assembly of the TV stand was very straight forward. Just make sure you follow the instructions. You have a choice as to how high the TV will be in the stand. I chose the lowest setting for mounting the TV on the stand. Leave the packaging on the TV as you will want to lie the TV flat in order to attach the stand to the rear of the TV. You can review all of the specs and features on the website. My review will discuss the TV set up and my experience using the TV. Setting up the TV was pretty easy. I had an issue with the remote working at first. I removed and switched the batteries and then the remote worked fine. When you turn the TV on, you will see a QR code to scan. After you scan the QR code, you are walked through the set up of the Goggle TV. I am using an ethernet connection. The TV supports up to Wifi 6. I tried Wifi as well and there are no issues. I had already connected all of my cables including ethernet. So when the TV was turned on, it detected my receiver and connected to it via the HDMI cable I connected to the eARC HDMI port. Nice! Sometimes people have issues with eARC. It is important to use a certified good HDMI cable. If you do not have one, make sure to add it to your TV order. The TV software update only took about 5 minutes to complete. In the Google Services section, I turned Help to improve Google TV to off. I turned the location setting off. Then you choose your app services to use. You can add another Google account at this time. I added another account. I did some research on the settings and this TV is very accurate out of the box. The only change I made was to use Filmmaker mode as this is supposed to be the most accurate. There are many options for adjusting your picture if that is what you want. I do not normally use TV apps. Apparently Dolby Vision 2 Max will be supported with a future firmware update. Nice! I did test the built-in speakers as you may want to use the built-in speakers. For Audio Output you select Internal Speaker and Subwoofer. The speakers are made by Bang & Olufsen. The sound is surprisingly good for built-in speakers. There is a Beosonic option in the menu if you use the internal speakers. Under Beosonic you can choose options like - bright, relaxed, energetic and warm. I have my antenna connected to the TV. I scanned for channels and both regular and NextGen TV stations were found. This took about 4 minutes. The TV guide was not there immediately but it did not take long for the guide to load. You will see the regular and Nextgen channels listed next to each other. Tuning in the NextGen channels is very fast. Much faster than another TV I own. I am impressed! The remote is very good! It feels good in the hand and is about the right size IMHO. And it is backlit!!! There are two important features on the right side of the remote. The top toggle allows you to change the brightness. The lower button allows you to change the picture mode. This is a very handy feature! There is a GameMaster setting in the menus. This will improve the latency on the selected inputs. I tested HDM3 connected to a gaming laptop with RTX4070 graphics. There are many gaming options to tweak with this TV (VRR ALLM, etc.) The native TV resolution is 144hz.. I tested Forza Horizon 6 and got a consistent 80+ FPS using 4K. The graphics are very impressive! Honestly I am a little surprised at how good they are. I did not experience any lags or tearing. I selected some apps to load when setting up Google TV. I added a missing one using the app store. You will see the downloaded apps on your main screen. Select the app you want to move. Hold down the center remote button to enable moving the app. Just move the app to the desired location in the app list on your main menu. There is 52GB of total space on the TV. Overall I rate this TV 5 out of 5. It has an amazing picture. I cannot think of anything lacking. There is great off angle viewing. The TV is bright. Gaming is impressive. I bet you will be as impressed as I am. I recommend this TV.

Premium quality at an affordable price by TCL

This review covers TCL’s 75-inch QM8L Series SQD Mini-LED 4K UHD HDR Smart TV. Introduced in 2026, the QM8L succeeds TCL’s popular QM8K series. Although TCL’s flagship X11L series is significantly more expensive, the more affordable QM8L inherits much of its premium technology, making it a high-end TV near the top of TCL’s lineup. I have owned this TV for about a week now and in that brief time, I have been really impressed by the color, brightness, and contrast of this TV. We have it located in the master bedroom sitting perfectly on a mid-height wide dresser. Unpacking and initial setup was quite simple. I really appreciate that the stand is a center-mount attractive platform, which really helps with TV stand placement, as opposed to most televisions using wide-mounted spindly legs. The mount assembled quickly with a two-part assembly for the stand and the back of the tv has two stand height options – high or low, which is perfect if you need clearance for a soundbar, which I do have. The whole process took eight small screws to assemble the stand and 4 larger screws to attach the stand to the back of the TV. Planning to use a separate soundbar, I was relieved to see that higher option available, especially since most product photos I viewed showed the TV stand in a low position. The TV itself has a full depth of about 2-inches, but its appearance looks thinner because it features a gradual tapered bevel down to just above one inch at the tv’s edges. It is a classy look with a very thin “ZeroBorder” brushed metal trim, slightly thicker along on the bottom edge. The QM8L packs in plenty of advanced technology, including a Super Quantum Dot Mini-LED display and TCL’s new TSR AI Pro Processor. In practice, that means excellent color accuracy and saturation, deep and uniform blacks, and bright crisp whites that rival premium OLED TVs. While OLED models typically perform best in darker rooms, the QM8L also excels in bright spaces as well. Its picture and sound settings are easy to customize, although most default options worked well for my setup. I did have to install a firmware update during the initial setup process. The screen itself has a high gloss finish, like OLED screens, but reflections are well-tamed at all viewing angles thanks to its WHVA 2.0 Ultra panel. I did not see any degradation in picture quality, even when viewing at extreme angles. As I said earlier, I am using a 2.1 soundbar, but I tested the Audio by Bang & Olufsen speakers by themselves and the sound was perfectly fine, really good in fact. If you are unfamiliar with Bang & Olufsen, they are a renowned Danish manufacturer of audiophile-quality sound systems. TCL does sell their own separate Bang & Olufsen soundbar with wireless subwoofer, or you can just add the wireless subwoofer separately to augment the TV’s built-in sound. That’s certainly a nice touch by TCL, especially when wall-mounting the TV and you do not want a bulky soundbar attached to the wall or TV mount. If I had to complain about anything and it’s nitpicking, the lettering on the remote is white on silver, making it difficult to read in some lighting. The remote is attractive though with its brushed metal face. Also, because it’s a Google TV, I experienced some short 1- or 2-second black screens…my research indicates this is normal behavior with Google TV as the HDMI connections “handshake” at power on. Attaching a streaming box and soundbar with HDMI connections may be to blame or at least contribute to the issue. Using the built-in apps to stream content would more than likely avoid this issue altogether. I think the 75-inch version of TCL’s 8MQL series of 4K televisions is well-deserving of a 5-star rating for its quality features and design, but especially for the premium quality of its picture.

Fantastic looking TV, but has its challenges.

The TCL QM8L Series is my second TCL TV, and this one is a step above my previous TV in terms of features, quality and price. This TV is a serious investment, and needs to reflect that in quality, performance and useability. So far in the 3 days I've had it and been using it, it has had its challenges in terms of set up and functionality, compared to my previous TCL TV. First off was setting it up - we unwrapped it carefully, set it up on top of our console (which fits perfectly), made sure everything was connected and then started the setup process after turning it on. You are guided to use your Google Account to set up the TV which is not unusual these days at all. A QR Code was displayed on the screen, but that QR Code did not work. I received the notification 'App Clip Unavailable'. Thought it was odd, so tried again. Still did not work. Grabbed my wife's phone to scan it, and still it did not work. Grabbed my son's phone and scanned it, and it still would not work, after trying 3 different phones. So now I was stuck with manually setting up the TV though the remote. This obviously took longer and was not as convenient as the usual QR Code set up. Once I was in, logged into my Google account and set up, I then set about turning off the most annoying feature on modern TVs, the adaptive motion setting, where it preempts the next pixels to 'motion smooth'. All this does is make shows look like they have been filmed on elementary school drama project sets and removes the grittier 'realism' from the show. I have never liked that feature and actively turn it off. And I am not alone, my wife hates that functionality as well. Now with that setting off, I set about getting the colors balanced how I like them. The menus are intuitive, although I feel like there were a lot less than there are on my 98" TCL TV as a comparison. I don't feel like I got the depth of adjustment that I had previously. It has been tough to find a great balance with the different settings (Vivid, Dolby Vision etc) - one seems to dark in combination with the adaptive brightness settings, one is, as stated, Vivid, which gave and almost unreal effect to areas in a scene with LED lighting - on screen it almost looked like all of the lights were really turned on and super bright, which was a cool yet weird visual, but then when you had a person wearing a white shirt, it was almost like they had an LED light source in their shirt. It's an odd dynamic. I am an avid Formula One fan, and this TV upgraded us from a 65" TV in our living room to a 75" TV. I am pleased to see, that while this TV is physically larger than our previous TV, due to its narrow edge frame and sleek design, it is not overpowering at all. It looks like it has always been there. Watching the F1 race last weekend, I put the screen into Vivid mode to make all of the liveries on the cars pop as they circulated the track. That made for an great visual experience while watching the race. Later that evening, while watching SILO, I changed the setting to Dolby Vision and that gave a grittier, more subdued view for the show, which helped set the mood. However, this is unusual for me to have to keep changing the viewing mode depending on what I am watching. I have been used to 'set it and forget it' in the past, so changing the viewing mode depending on the content is a little unusual for me. However, I DO like that on the side of the sleek remote control is a button that pulls up the viewing option menu and you can quick access it and change it on the fly. I actually thought that was going to adjust the brightness of the aluminum faced backlit remote, but it doesn't, it actually changes the brightness on the TV! That is a nice touch. As for the screen, the SQD-Mini LED screen offers edge to edge coverage and is great to look at from any viewing angle. I did notice that the screen is very reflective when off, that calms down some when you remove the protective film, and then when the screen is on, you see a lot less reflections, unless the content is dark, and then reflections become very visible again. It would be really beneficial if the screen was somewhat satin, or matte in finish instead. I also notice on the front panel (in front of the screen) that is was not 'flat' and has some waves in it (which hopefully shows in the pictures) and also the back of the TV has a wave in the plastic molding as well. The aluminum look frame is elegant, it frames the screen well, and gives the TV an upscale look. There isn't a TCL brand on the front, just an 'Audio by Bang & Olufsen' script and then on the upper right side is a 'Premium SQL-Mini LED' script as well. This all adds to it's premium look overall, coupled with the slim, aluminum faced, backlit remote. The remote is intuitive and actually operates the Amazon Fire TV we have hooked into the back of the TV. That was a great move which after our initial setup issues, plugging the Fire TV stick in the back of the TV worked perfectly. As for built in apps, there are plenty to choose from and they all seem to work well without lag, however, there does appear to be a black screen between choices, which seems to be a 'Google' thing when navigating. I have seen that on other Google enabled TVs in the house. The stand-alone Bang & Olufsen speakers do a great job for a TV like this, but there is no substitute for a dedicated surround sound system, and that is predominantly how I use this system. The remote also controls the audio on my surround sound system, and that was without having to pair it or input a code which was great! Overall, I am still getting used to the settings, as I say, I've had this TV 3 days so far, and have been working out what is best for us - but in that time, I've watched a variety of sports, TV shows on different streaming services, and also movies. I have been impressed with the color output of the screen, the mini LEDs aren't just a gimmick, they do seem to make a big difference, adding color, saturation and vibrance in a way that I have not seen before. I think this is a nice step forward over the previous TCL TV I have, but it also makes it a little more challenging to use, in the fact that 'one size doesn't fit all' when it comes to screen settings. I now have to make a decision when watching something, what is the best overall setting for this type of show, how do I want this to look, rather than just turning it on and watching. I will get used to it, but it is different to how I use my TVs currently. It is intuitive once you get it set up, there is a little delay between turning it on, and getting the channel you desire, be it for gaming, where it sets up the screen resolution and refresh rate for you, or if you are streaming locally from the Google ecosystem, or from a Fire TV in the HDMI port. But once it is on, and to your preferred input, the screen is vibrant, bright, and colorful. This screen has made a big difference to our viewing experience in our living room.

75QM8L is an impressive Google TV

TCL’s 75QM8L is an impressive Google TV. It has a very sleek design, with a silver bezel on the bottom and next to no bezel on the sides and top. I mounted this TV in my living room above the fireplace mantel. It fits perfectly. There is a lot of tape and a nice protective layer on the screen that peels off easily once you’ve got it mounted or stabilized – making sure there’s no fingerprints on your screen. This was easy to hang and looks brilliant! Plugging in and turning it on from the remote you’ll hear a little click indicating that it’s coming to life. Initially it needed updating, and it restarted by itself after that. I signed in with my google information and it pretty much knew everything – very intuitive. Getting the picture right took a little bit of time, and another update. After that 2nd update it was very clear, bright, crisp, and motion is spot on. It has an amazing picture that works well in a lit room or a dark one. I added a TCL sound bar and subwoofer using e-ARC and it worked like a dream with no programming needed, and the TV remote worked with it immediately. Now, the only downside to this set would be the remote, which works fine, is a nice silver color, but it is simple. No backlights, no cool features, but it works, and it’s incredibly responsive, no matter where it’s pointing – even if it’s not facing the TV, it will still work. We found that just simply saying ‘Google’ means it goes to work and listens to you – it provided a response just like my Nest or Tablet would. Which is going to be fun. Overall, this is an amazing TV with a great price point and amazing picture – I would highly recommend it if you’re in the market.

    This tv is incredible.

First, I use this tv for movies, gaming on Xbox, my PC monitor for gaming, web browsing, and streaming. Before I bought the TCL Q8ML, I went through 2 - 65'' LG OLEDS and 2 - 75'' Sony Mini Led tv's. I have spent thousands of dollars on warranties from Best Buy and thank God I did. The two LGs ended up with terrible burn in, and both of my Sonys had panel failure. After seeing what was happening with these big name tv's I had enough. So I started to look beyond those big names and see what is out there. I am so glad I did because I found the TCL Q8ML. This tv so far is incredible. It is bright, the sound is great, the color of the picture is just beautiful, all four of the tv inputs are 4k 120Hz, and the gaming mode is fantastic. It is hands down better than the Bravia 9 mini led I spent $3500 on. I know people are going to say no way, but that is my experience. I don't leave reviews for anything, but I am so impressed with this tv I had to do it. Also, so I could tell other buyers don't just look at Sony, Samsung, and LG. The TCL Q8ML will absolutely surprise you. For an example, my gaming pc has a Nvidia 5070 TI and was running terribly on the Bravia 9. The tv would stutter and kept switching between screen modes on it's own. Also, for some reason I could only use 1080p at 120hz after a firmware update from Sony. On the Q8ML I have used the 1080p at 120hz, 4k at 120hz, and 1440p at 120hz. It runs so smooth and the picture is so bright and colorful. As I am writing this review I believe the 75'' TCL Q8ML is on sale for $1699.99 and the warranty is $399.99 for 5 years. That is a steal for this tv. The only problem I ran into was I could not see this tv on display. I am not sure why Best Buy didn't have the Q8ML on display it is a 2026 model after all. I checked within 100 miles of me and not one store had one. So I went to Youtube and other websites to see if this tv was any good and if it would suit my needs and I can tell you that it has really exceeded my expectations. I am very happy with the TCL Q8ML and recommend you look into it before going and spending $4000 on a different brand.

  • If using a Fire stick in the HDMI port, are most functions controllable with the fire remote?

Our TVs are compatible with most Universal remotes. Many Universal box remotes can be programmed to control select functions on the TV. You can visit https://support.tcl.com/us-remote-codes for more information. If you do not see your specific remote, you would need to contact the remote's manufacturer to obtain the remote code from them. Hope this helps! Thank you, TCL Customer Support
