Turk Mauro - Live In Paris - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In 1991 Tenor and Baritone saxophonist Turk Mauro was living in Paris, France, trying his luck as the classic expatriate American Jazz Man. From what I understand, he had some epic times out that way, and at least 3 recordings document his Parisian adventures, at least musically speaking. The third of these was a sort of an Inchin-studioInch Jazz Party Turk entitled InchJazz PartyInch, which we have updated for specificity, to Parisian Jazz Party. This was only distributed on a very small scale, and never really made it into the digital age. But, this is one of our goals at Soul Kid Jazz, to bring you some classic work you may have otherwise missed entirely. This great music needs to be heard in 2020 and beyond. Featured on this along with Mauro, are of course his expert, swinging drummer Ron Turso, who is in fine form as always. French musicians round out the group Alain Jean Marie holds it down on piano, and Michel Gaudry is on bass. One highlight is the leader's effervescent vocals on the blues number, Roll 'em Pete. Parisian Jazz Party is once again that positively swinging, traight-ahead, party feeling from Pizza and Beer in the studio, when it really is a celebratory vibe between good friends. Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the Serenada in G, K 525, comes from a later period of Mozart's life. In 1781 Mozart, who had returned from Mannheim and Paris to the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg, accompanied his patron on a visit to the Imperial capital, Vienna. There he finally broke with his employer and secured his dismissal from the archiepiscopal court. In Vienna there seemed every opportunity, which it seemed his patron was deliberately preventing him from seizing. The last ten years of Mozart's life were spent in Vienna, without the presence of his father to guide him and without the kind of secure patronage that he had hoped to gain at court. An imprudent marriage brought it's own difficulties, but Mozart, nevertheless, won some immediate acclaim, both in the theatre and as a performer on the fortepiano, popularity which waned, but had begun to revive at the time of his sudden death in December, 1791. Eine kleine Nachtmusik was written in August, 1787, a few months after the death of Leopold Mozart in Salzburg, while Mozart was preparing his new opera, Don Giovanni, for performance in Prague The occasion of it's composition is unknown, but the work would have been suitable for domestic performance. Originally including a first Minuet, now lost, the Serenade opens with music as lucid and cheerful as anything Mozart wrote, followed by a Romance of charm and ingenuity, a spry Minuet and a final Rondo, a conclusion to the remarkable series of Serenades and Divertimenti on which Mozart had embarked twenty years before, as a ten-year-old.

Before Tenor Saxophonist Turk Mauro fully relocated to Paris, France in 1991, he was working on a special project an album of ballads that were not always played as ballads. In 1988 he began recording this project for Bloomdido Records, a French independent tag, run by Jacques Charmeteau. Charmeteau had the insight to record several albums by Mauro, featuring his brother, drummer Ron Turso in various settings. For this first time digital , Soul Kid Jazz brings you InchLove SongsInch, digitally cleaned up and remastered for 2022 so that lovers of ballads and straight ahead jazz music can hear this Saxophone master, perhaps for the first time. The story of this album has a rather melancholy tale attached to it, as the mother of Turk and Ron, Angelica, lay dying in a hospital in Florida, USA. The brothers had been booked for a tour of France, and they were unsure if they should depart or not, but their amazing mom told the brothers, InchGo and knock 'em out boys!Inch And so they went on the tour, along with their high school pal, Hammond Organ great Bobby Forrester, and unfortunately Angelica passed while they were out on the road. Upon learning this terrible news, Turk decided it was time to stay in Paris and finish up the Love Songs project. Charmeteau brought them into Sun Studio, and what transpired is a profoundly heartfelt dedication to Angelica Turso, who had passed away on January 15th, 1990. The session was recorded only 3 days later. On this entire album, specially on InchCome Back to SorrentoInch Turk pours his heart and soul into the music, as he says goodbye to her in song. Rounding out the personnel, on the earlier session is the great pianist Jimmy Rowles, who also blesses us with some vocals on InchDo You Know Why Stars Come Out at NightInch.
